I’d say 84x54 isn’t too big at all, little small compared to the pit slab we have. If you would generally sit on one side of it due to wind I’d build the pit on the opposite side so you have plenty of room to get far enough away from the heat or smoke while still sitting level on the slab More on reddit.com

Alright so it seems there are a lot opinions of fire pits here so sorry if I say something crazy.
I have an old concrete pad in the back of my house for a shed. I don't plan on using it anytime soon, and a firepit circle seems like a perfect use for now. I would like to avoid destroying the pad, especially if I end up needing a shed in the next few years.
I could get a portable fire pit, but I am looking to see if I can build a simple one for a few hundred dollars.
The main thing I don't know is what to do at the base of the pit. Would a sand layer up to the first row of bricks be enough to reasonably protect the concrete pad? Or would a gravel/sand mix be better? Or fire bricks?
Besides the base, was going to get some pavers like these and this metal ring and go from there.
Or should I just stick with portable to avoid damage to the pad?

My two cents. Buy a fire pit that you can move. I’m in landscaping and have many clients that don’t end up using their built fire pits because the conditions have to be just right to use them. With a mobile one, you can shift it around the pad and move your chairs as needed to avoid smoke and make it more usable.
