Cage sprung, open coil & continuous coil mattresses - John Ryan By Design
April 7, 2024 - If it has ‘coil’ in the description you can be pretty sure it’s referring to a cage sprung mattress. They represent a support unit made of a continuous piece of wire that is coiled to create a massive set of joined crude springs.

Those kinds of mattresses can't be compressed and shipped, so online options will be limited. The best option is usually finding a local manufacturer. You can also look for small independent mattress shops, they will usually carry innerspring options.

LPT: Things to look for when buying a new mattress
And most importantly of all, when driving it home on top of your car, you must have one arm out the window to hold it in place. For best results have a buddy on the passenger side, just in case it gets mouthy up there. I've been seeing a lot of mattresses on the roads lately, so please secure your loads properly. wtf is wrong with mattresses these days
Just look for used innerspring only mattresses ( no memory foams) and always plan on needing toppers too. I’m up to building my own latex bed now after spending several thousand on a foam/ spring hybrid piece of junk that lasted less than 3 years. The foam does the same to me: hugs my body causing my spine to go out of alignment. I will only sleep on latex or old fashioned spring beds from now on. So far 6 inches of medium Dunlop latex works great for my back as a 145 pound side sleeper. I don’t believe side sleeping means a softer foam bed at all after my experience. Everyone is different for sure, but memory foam just doesn’t maintain or keep the spine properly aligned from my experience. Since using the former toppers I no longer have low back pain at all and don’t wake up tired and groggy. I was getting nerve pain from the memory foam. It’s too bad because it initially feels great until I’ve slept on it. More on reddit.com
Are pocket springs the new hotness?
Springs have always been better than foam (except possibly latex) - the reason you saw so much foam was because it could be roll shipped - nothing more. That’s why you see pocket coils now - they’re the only spring that can be roll shipped. (Except niche super cheap mattresses examples mentioned below that have the worst possible coil - a bonnell coil without a border wire or rigid helical connection). More on reddit.com
Do more pocket coils make a better mattress?
While the number of pocket coils in a mattress can affect its overall support and durability, it's not the sole factor determining the mattress's quality. Other factors, such as the gauge of the coils, the quality of materials used in the comfort layers, and the mattress's overall construction, also play crucial roles in determining how well the mattress performs.
Therefore, while more pocket coils may contribute to better support and responsiveness, it's essential to consider the mattress's overall design and construction.

Are pocket coil mattresses good for you?
Pocket coil mattresses can be a good option for many people, particularly those who prefer a mattress with more bounce and support. The individual coils in pocket coil mattresses conform to the body's shape, offering customized support and relieving pressure points, which can contribute to better sleep quality. The pocketed coils also isolate motion better than traditional open springs.
However, personal preferences, such as firmness level and sleep position, should also be considered when determining if a pocket coil mattress is the right choice for you.

Can you flip a pocket coil mattress?
Whether you can flip a pocket coil mattress depends on its design. Many modern pocket coil mattresses are designed to be one-sided and should not be flipped. Flipping such mattresses could result in discomfort and uneven wear.
However, some pocket coil mattresses may be designed to be flippable, typically with the same comfort layers on both sides.
