Sounds like you are asking about Luminous Efficacy, which is lumens per Watt. Wikipedia has a whole page on this with examples . Incandescent lights are roughly 15 lumens per watt. Halogen 20 lumens per watt. LEDs light bulbs are generally 100-110 lm/W, although entertainment fixtures are only 30-50 lm/W for some reason. Answer from RexKoeck on reddit.com

Confused about Lumens and Watts conversion in IKEA description for GU10 LED bulb
While there are ROUGH numbers you can look at, in the end wattage is the energy used, and lumens are the amount of visible light. They're not going to translate and it's unfortunate that wattage was always associated with how bright a light is at this point. Your best bet is to compare lumens to lumens. More on reddit.com

Question? Major LED manufacturers broke over 300 lumens per watt in 2014. So why do we still have LED’s that take over 8 watts to get 800 lumens?
Also the quality of the LED plays a big factor, CRI 70 LED is much easier to get efficient then CRI90+ More on reddit.com

Tungsten / HMI / LED - Wattage Conversion question.
Most reputable companies list the metrics of their product's light output. Mole and Arri do at least. http://www.arrirental.de/lighting/photometric-calculator/ As a general guideline, HMI's offer about 4x the light output per watt compared to tungsten units. Your mileage will definitely vary, though, because every light spots and floods differently and has varying degrees of uniformity to their light output. I've found that there is a bit of padding on the part of manufacturers with their stated equivalencies of their LED fresnels to actual tungsten fresnels. They'll usually claim that the LED fresnel is "equivilent to a 1k/2k/5k," ect, and the actual output is usually quite a bit less. That's not a horrible trade off considering you can now plug a "5k" LED lamp into a wall outlet. The Sola 6 has the output of a 650w fresnel based off a quick search. Another thing to keep in mind is how the light output scales with wattage between different types of light fixtures. With tungsten, there is a significant jump in output between a 5k and a 10k or a 10k and a 20k. With HMI's, the difference between a 12k and an 18k is pretty minimal. Maybe about a 1/2 stop. I'm not sure how LED compares to these two, however, since the wattage of LED's isn't able to go very high. More on reddit.com

r/lightingdesign on Reddit: wattage to lumen formulas?
August 11, 2023 -

I am much closer to retirement than college. I have worked in film lighting for almost all of it but started in theater. We called things, 1K, 575, 1200, 2k, 5k, 10k, 20k, but that is outdated now, and admittedly a bad system. When I hear that a unit is Eleventy point five hundred lumens it has NO, (and I mean none) useful information. Is it like a candle? is it like the Sun? is it a like a oncoming headlight? or the light over a seat on a plane?
Is there a formula or even a rule of thumb that will translate the new terms into something I am more familiar with? Thank You!

Watts to Lumens, Lumens to Lux: The Ultimate Guide to Understanding Lighting Performance - LEOTEK
February 7, 2025 - Modern LED lighting requires us to look beyond wattage. The concept of luminous efficacy helps bridge the gap between power consumption and light output. Luminous efficacy is the ratio of luminous flux (lumens) to power consumption (watts) and is expressed in lumens per watt (lm/W). A higher efficacy value means the light source is more efficient at converting energy into visible light.

We see these lumen numbers on the ... all new LED bulb packages. It may take a while to get used to using lumens instead of watts, but it’s important in order to make the best lighting choices. Now that we understand watts and lumens, we can use both terms to come up with lumens per watt or “efficacy” (or “luminous efficacy”). This is a measure of how well a light source converts energy (watts) ...

Similarly, if you want to replace your 53W halogen light bulb with a modern LED, the LED will probably use between 9 and 13 Watts of energy. In each case, the important factor when choosing the replacement is to get a similar Lumens rating. To replace the 40W incandescent with a CFL you’d be looking for one with about a 400 Lumen output.
