Thoughts on cork flooring in a kitchen?
I had gorgeous cork floors in my kitchen. After just a couple of years, though, they started showing wear at the joints. I don't know why, but eventually you could delineate each tile, one from the next. We wound up pulling them out after maybe seven or eight years and installing ceramic tile. While the cork was down, though, we loved it. It was warm underfoot, sufficiently resilient that a knife that fell blade down "healed" itself and didn't show a mark, and dishes typically didn't shatter when they hit the floor. Sadly, it looked like crap after just a few years. More on reddit.com

After tons of debating, we went with cork flooring in the kitchen. A month in and we are in love!
Hi OP, I would love an update on how the floor is holding up. I see a lot of complaints about cork flooring, but understand brands vary greatly. More on reddit.com

Could use input on Cork vs Bamboo flooring in kitchen
We love our cork! We've had it in our living room, hallways, and kitchen for two years. Don't worry about water... spills aren't a big deal. I suppose they could be if you let them sit for a long time, but it hasn't been an issue for us. The biggest problem we have had is with a large (110 lb) dog. We struggled to keep our dog's nails clipped short enough to not be a problem, so we've got a few places (near the kitchen table) where he liked to hang out and the floor got dinged quite a bit. It's more noticeable in the kitchen which has a dark stain. The natural cork in the living room has dog scratches too, but they are hard to see since the cork is the same color throughout. If we were to do it again we'd do the natural cork in the kitchen as well. Our cork had 3 layers of polyurethane applied after being glued down. We did have to install a new sub-floor for the cork which added to the expense, but we're glad we did. Anyway, good luck with the decision! If we hadn't done cork we would have done bamboo and I think you'll be happy either way. More on reddit.com

Even though kitchens are potentially wetter areas, we like floating cork in the kitchen because it often provides more cushioning than solid, glue-down cork. This is most likely due to the difference in thickness between the two products as well as the additional layers inherent in the construction of engineered flooring.

Cork Flooring in The Kitchen: What are The Pros and Cons?
July 21, 2020 - Aside from simple installation, cork flooring has a few advantages over vinyl, laminate, or hardwood flooring. • Resistance to mold and mildew • Able to handle foot traffic, making it ideal for kitchens as they are known to be the busiest room in the household • A soft surface that makes it comfortable to stand on for long periods of time while washing dishes, prepping, and cooking • Natural soundproof insulation that blocks out noise • Easy-to-clean and maintain • Easy to fix if damaged, as cork can be repaired by replacing a tile or plank

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Thoughts on cork flooring in a kitchen?
October 30, 2015 -

Hi everyone!

I'm in the early stages of planning a fairly significant home renovation. So far, I know I want dark hardwood running through most of the top floor (split level house--we've got a large living/dining area, 3 bedrooms, and a bathroom on the top floor). I don't want to run hardwood through the kitchen, but I do want it to match the rest of the floor to help give the kitchen an airier feeling, as it's a pretty small space.

I'm not a fan of most tile, so I'm thinking of installing cork tiles that are similar in tone to the hardwood. The kitchen doesn't get a ton of natural light, so I'm not too worried about fading, and I'm aware that it will need to be sealed. Has anyone installed cork in their kitchen, or have any insight on that idea? I'd appreciate any thoughts.

A Cork Floor In The Kitchen | Young House Love
September 13, 2024 - When it came to finishing things off in the corner of the kitchen and our tiny laundry room, it was pretty much exactly the same method that we outlined in our kitchen corking post, although we were getting worried that we were running low on cork, so we actually used some remnant planks all along the left wall (leftover cuts from the kitchen) to ensure that we wouldn’t run out. Thankfully we finished up with about four planks to spare. Not kidding. It was crazy close. So we’re at least thankful to have those as extras, and plan to seal the heck out of these to protect them. Cork can even be sanded, restained, and resealed down the line if it gets worse for wear, so 40+ year old cork floors exist (which is nice to know since cork sounds like such a new-age material).
