2 weeks ago - Even though it's primarily a pair of earbuds, the Apple AirPods Pro 2 has a software feature that essentially makes it an FDA-approved OTC hearing aid. Priced at $179.99 at Costco, it's by far the most affordable option, offering incredible value.

Pros & Cons Of Costco Hearing Aids
Quality Costco hearing aids are made by reputable manufacturers, and the quality is pretty good. When reviewing feature comparison charts, you can see that premium Kirkland hearing aid technology is quite comparable to the technology found in other premium aids.

Buying hearing aids: is Costco ok?
Yes. You may get *better* care at Costco than a full price retailer. If you have out-of-network coverage you can buy from Costco and then submit a reimbursement, but in many cases they're cheaper than hearing aids *with* insurance (and not by a small margin). The hearing aid industry is dominated by the "big six" brands. Costco's brands are all sub brands of four of the big six. In some cases they're identical in all but branding, in some cases there are minor differences to know about. You'll also see that hearing aids come in technology levels-- usually 3-4 per brand. they all use different model numbers but the terminology of "Premium" for the best, "Advanced" for the 2nd best "Basic" for the 3rd best (may be the lowest, may be the 2nd lowest) and "Essential" for the bottom end model. Costco only sell the Premium tier. That can matter a whole lot. Even if you get the best and newest *model* of hearing aid, but it's a Basic or Essential technology level, it may be equivalent to buying a premium hearing aid multiple generations old in some ways. The sound quality *is* tied to that technology level and if you need to go down the levels to make an Audiologist hearing aid affordable keep that in mind. Other considerations may include how complex your hearing loss is (it doesn't sound like it's complex at all) and the hearing aid you specifically choose may be influenced heavily by the phone you use and what specific sound qualities you're looking for in a hearing aid. They don't all sound the same and some favor speech comprehension over sounding natural (and vice versa.) More on reddit.com

My experience with Costco hearing aids
They aren't bad but depending on what you need, you might be paying an arm and a leg for something far cheaper elsewhere. Something like these Atom Pro 2s by Audien cost about $250 compared to the $1500 minimum you'd spend at Costco. They connect via Bluetooth, money back guarantee, etc. For the price, you can't beat them. More on reddit.com

Costco
Some have audiologists, most have hearing instrument specialists (I've seen people harp on the fact that they're not audiologists, but I've only had one bad experience with one of them -- and it was a bad adjustment, no errors during the hearing test itself) and do real ear measurements. It's a separate section in the store, usually next to the pharmacy and the optical department. They will do adjustments for you. Costco hearing aids are made by major hearing aid manufacturers -- the Philips hearing aids they sell are made by the same company that makes Oticon. $1599 for a pair. More on reddit.com

r/HearingAids on Reddit: My experience with Costco hearing aids
September 30, 2024 -

I had never worn hearing aids before and my mild-moderate hearing loss was getting worse. So, because of reviews and cost, I chose Costco hearing aids. I had tried a couple of OTC amplifiers but they did not help me understand speech and loud sounds were too jarring with them. So, I got the Philips 9040 (Oticon) aids from Costco.

I tried them for a few months but overall the sound was awful because:

  1. I could not understand people right in front of me when there was a crowd around. So, with many people around, I had to take the aid off to understand my immediate group of people. This happened even on bluetooth phone calls.

  2. Loud sounds were jarring. I have loud sound sensitivity and the hearing aids made me nauseous whenever I was around loud people. Oh, and loud distant noises were awful too. Like being able to hear the far off clanking of dishware in restaurants when all I wanted to do was to hear the people next to me. Walking near traffic became overwhelming.

  3. All sounds were different. I did not recognize people's voices from people I had known for years. I had to relearn how different people sounded. I also had to relearn the sound of water, fans, etc. Everything sounded flat and it was only when I took off the HAs did the world sound full.

  4. Music sounded flat, too. Like listening to sounds recorded with a very low bit rate. My $20 pair of earbuds were so much better sounding. Reading the comments on this subReddit, I guess this is how HAs are meant to be, and I am not the only one.

  5. There was no effective noise canceling. If I wanted to hear people in a car that had road noise, I had to remove my HAs. Otherwise, the sounds I heard were mainly road noise with unintelligible speech in the background.

So, I went back a couple of times to the HA specialist at Costco with my complaints and got my HAs tweaked a couple of times. Nothing much improved and in some ways became even worse.

On a whim, I went to a different Costco. The difference was amazing. This HA specialist did an update, and gave my Android app the speech in noise setting. Both settings now make my aids sound 100% better and I can wear them comfortably for longer periods of time. I now actually want to wear them when I go out.

I don't know what to make of my experiences. But, I did want to say that maybe if you are having problems, perhaps another fitter might be helpful.

Costco Hearing Aid Review For 2026
2 days ago - Costco is one of several hearing healthcare options. While it's particularly popular among budget-focused consumers, it's not the right option for everyone (i.e., complex ear history, asymmetric or profound hearing losses, etc.) OTC hearing aids are often a good alternative to Costco with more convenient at home care and sometimes lower prices (see Jabra Enhance Select and Sennheiser All Day Clear).
