As a pale Irish person gold is not my favourite colour to wear. But it's not so much about being pale; it's about your undertones. I have very cool pink undertones so I look better in silver than gold. But then for example, there's a potentially surprising number of fair people from the Mediterranean region, who are pale but would mostly have warmer, olive undertones and they can do gold well.

However, gold is not the worst for cool fair people- it's still better than actual neutrals like beige or taupe. It's just not my favourite. According to Google a bright yellow gold looks good on all skin tones so maybe lean more that way vs a champagne-y colour.
