June 7, 2025 - Stunning, immersive cinematography showcases the wonder of life under the seas and exposes the realities and challenges facing our ocean as never-before-seen, from destructive fishing techniques to mass coral reef bleaching.

May 8, 2025 - As he says, until relatively recently, the ocean was regarded as a kind of mysterious, undifferentiated Sahara, a wilderness, of interest largely for providing an apparently endless supply of food. But he shows us an amazing vista of diversity and life, an extraordinary undulating landscape, a giant second planet of whose existence humanity has long been unaware but now seems in danger of damaging or even destroying. Attenborough shows us that glorious places of colour and light and life can be scoured and scorched into a nuclear winter of nothingness by overfishing, but that by preserving places from this kind of industrialisation, creating “no take zones”, we can give the ocean and its lifeforms time to recover.

June 8, 2025 - The plea to save our oceans is heartfelt and moving, with David telling us that he's coming to the end of his days. I was appalled at the wanton and greedy destruction of the ocean habitats and sea creatures through profligate overfishing.

But the cinematography was beyond beautiful. I cried at the beauty, despair and glimmer of hope the movie portrayed. David Attenborough is the world's best narrator and lover of nature.

April 29, 2025 - Attenborough, who turns 99 on the day of the film’s release, explains how the world’s oceans, and our understanding of them, have changed in his lifetime. Once full of both mystery and fish, our planet’s waters are now better understood than ever – though there are still vast depths unexplored – but their wildlife populations have been decimated by pollution and careless, excessive fishing. The cinematography, as with just about anything Attenborough puts his name to, is stunning (directors are Toby Nowlan, Keith Scholey and Colin Butfield).

Attenborough is making a desperate plea to his audience in this film: he understands all too well the threat we currently pose to our planet, and he urgently wants us to understand too. It’s a powerful thing, to have such a high-profile and esteemed documentary film maker putting out such a striking and dramatic statement in support of environmentalism. The documentary begins by showcasing the beauty of the oceans.

The film’s mission is clear: it’s meant to inform, inspire, and advocate by making the case that the fate of the world’s oceans is tied to our own. ... So while this is environmental film-making at its most powerful — at times, it comes at you like a sledgehammer blow — crucially, it finds cause for optimism. ... As Attenborough says, knowledge is important for change, and films like this that highlight the plights of the ocean, and the far-reaching effects of losing the species within, will help move the conversations, and actions, in the right direction.

This is likely to be Attenborough’s swan song and it’s perhaps his most urgent film to date.

Directors Toby Nowlan, Colin Butfield and Keith Scholey deftly stitch that shift in perspective into a number of scenes.

June 26, 2025 - Abundant and pristine marine worlds have been brutally ploughed, leaving behind a grey “nuclear winter” on the ocean floor. Now, local fishermen only catch plastic in their nets. It’s a horrifying, heartbreaking shift in tone. We’ve let ourselves down, but even worse, we’ve let Sir David Attenborough down.

I loved it! It was a beautiful & easily accessible book full of stunning imagery and scientific descriptions. Honestly felt just like watching a David Attenborough nature documentary! Highly recommend :) Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for providing this book for review consideration ...

There is a great balance in stories and information and think it makes it very accessible for those that want to learn about the Ocean's amazing and unique ecosystems. Please note that I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. ... I listened to the audiobook with Simon. It was narrated by the authors, David Attenborough and Colin Butfield.
