June 15, 2023Dazed and Confused just left me…well, dazed and confused, and not in a good way
I love the movie, it feels very "in the moment"--like you're really there with kids on that specific day. It isn't looking back on it to say anything or looking forward, it's just a day in the life of some kids and what they're going through. Even though "not much happens" I found myself immersed in the events of the movie and along for the ride. But that's a very specific type of movie that definitely isn't for everyone. I was a fan of Richard Linklater’s Before trilogies. Boyhood was alright. Someone recommended to watch Dazed and Confused so I gave it a try. I liked the fact there were a lot of would-be A-listers such as Matthew McConaughey, Mila Jovovich, Ben a fleck etc . However, the plot was non-existent and the characters were super unlivable and annoying. It’s just bunch of teenagers bullying, smoking weed, partying and being rebellious for an hour and a half.
I get it that’s the point of a lot of teen movies. But why is this movie held in such high regard? It’s basically a 70s version of Superbad but at least Superbad was more entertaining and exciting to watch. I’d rather watch Clueless than D & C and that’s saying something.
Could it be because of its portrayal of the 70s teen and kinda triggered the 90s moviegoers nostalgic feelings? Anyways, watching it in 2021, it did not work for me.

Taking place on the last day of school in a small suburban town, "Dazed and Confused" is a brilliant ensemble piece rivaling anything done by Robert Altman that covers the broadest spectrum of teenagers imaginable. We see the nerds, the potheads, the jocks, and the cheerleaders, as well as the incoming freshmen, as they celebrate the beginning of summer. Some celebrate less than others, of course; freshman hazing is a big part of the movie, both male and female.

And I must be honest: the first time I saw Dazed and Confused, I was disappointed. It just didn’t seem realistic; it was like a cinematic caricature. The fashion seemed exaggerated. The hazing seemed implausible. The idea of teenagers in a car being shot at for wrecking a mailbox seemed ridiculous. It was entertaining, and I appreciated the fact that the word man was said 185 times in casual conversation, but I had waited a year for this. The movie inside my brain was still better.
