Best RAM for Gaming: DDR4, DDR5 Kits for 2026
November 21, 2025 - Buyers in the performance PC market have only two excuses for stopping at DDR4-3200: Either they’re trying to save money or coax good performance from a system that can’t go much farther. For those in either category, but the former in particular, Patriot Patriot’s 32GB Viper Steel 3200 kit outshines the competition in terms of pricing price, beating its closest competition by approximately 18%. That’s without any performance penalties beyond having the exact mid-market timings as its competitors.

r/buildapc on Reddit: Is DDR4 3200MHz RAM still worth it in 2024? (as a sole upgrade to an existing build)
January 20, 2024 -

I'm thinking of filling out my 2 other free RAM slots with 16GB sticks so I'd have 64GB total, but everyone's talking about DDR5 nowadays that I'm wondering if it'd be worth it in the long run (3-5 years)...

I've found a deal for about $80 total for 2x16GB sticks and considering that about a year ago these same sticks were literally twice the price, I think it's a good deal?

Also, yeah, I do need 64GB because gaming isn't the only thing I do on my PC, there's a lot of heavy RAM usage from my work programs, I'm just wondering if this low RAM price is a bait? Will DDR4 sticks further crash in price?

Also, is 64GB of 3200MHz DDR4 better than like 32GB of 5000MHz DDR5?

DDR4 is still perfectly relevant. If you were building a completely new build you wouldn't likely spec it out, but it's more than enough to play everything now. Here's an analogy from u/minerlj last year that I think summarizes it well: DDR4 city has a 3600mhz cl16 train system. its trains go 36 miles an hour, and a train arrives at each station every 16 minutes to pick up/drop off passengers. assuming an arbitrary trip length of 36 miles, the average trip length will be 1 hour, meaning if you arrive at the station just in time to catch a train, the maximum trip length is 1 hour and if you are unlucky and arrive at the station and just miss your train, the maximum trip length will be 1 hour and 16 minutes. The average trip length however is 60+8.5 = 68.5 minutes The neighboring DDR5 city, has a 6000 mhz cl40 train system. its trains go faster: 60 miles an hour. but a train arrives at each station less often: every 40 minutes to pick up/drop off passengers. Assuming an arbitrary trip length of 36 miles, the average trip length will be 36 minutes if you arrive at the station just in time to catch a train, the maximum trip length is 36 minutes. if you arrive at the station and just miss your train, the maximum trip length will be 36 minutes and 40 minutes, or 76 minutes total (1 hour and 16 minutes total - the exact same max trip time as DDR4 city if you just miss your train in that city). The average trip length however is 36+20.5 = 56.5 minutes So if you had to choose which city to live in, you would probably choose DDR5 city. on average you'll get where you need to go 17.5% faster. ---- end of analogy So, here are the things that I think the analogy is missing, The amount of data that we're talking about it is variable based on what you're doing, and we're not talking about is more like milliseconds not minutes. Can you tell the difference between 56ms and 68ms? probably not. So what does it practically mean? Well I found a YT Video that compares some recent games between the two memories. Check it out: https://youtu.be/YESz_XA2kKc?si=AfLmn4FAwiH-LOLp

Well, your DDR4 motherboard is all you have to work with now, so you don't necessarily have to do a whole platform upgrade to DDR5 -- especially when it's $50-70 for more DDR4 RAM versus multiple hundreds of dollars for a platform upgrade. Get the DDR4 ram sticks. $80 is a little steep though (if you're in US); you can get a 2x16gb kit for about $55-60 and stretching to $70 for some RGB kits (unless you're paying the Corsair tax). Get a kit that matches the one you already have.

November 14, 2022 - Probably should have just paid the difference but I found the same board in DDR4 version on sale for $400 and bought 32GB of 3200 DDR4 instead. Trying to return my DDR5 dimms. January 14, 2022 - ... This is purely a choice of preference. Considering this is an Intel setup, you won't see much of a benefit going from 3200MHz to 3600MHz. You can also possibly overclock to 3333MHz or even higher. And right now 16GB is still plenty but there are games starting to require more memory.

I got this PC for Christmas last year, a HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-2003w, (https://support.hp.com/id-en/document/c07764083) that has a custom Erica6 motherboard with a Ryzen 5 5600G and a B550A chipset (motherboard specs here: https://support.hp.com/id-en/document/c07093984). The factory PC only comes with 8GB of RAM and I want to upgrade to 32GB. I found some and wonder which 1 should I get and what is the difference. Like is the price difference just because of the brand?

r/buildapc on Reddit: 32GB DDR4 Ram native 3200MHz
May 19, 2023 -

I have a B550 Asus ROG Strix F Gaming WIFI board.

I'd like to get 32GB DDR4 RAM that runs native at 3200MHz.

When I search on Amazon, a lot of what I come across is stuff like Corsair Vengeance or Kingston Fury Beast/Renegade and they don't run natively at 3200Mhz, they have to be overclocked to that speed. Some reviews say their RAM failed within a month or two which already sounds like the memory chips aren't that high quality.

I really don't want to overclock the RAM and I'm struggling on what I thought would be an easy find.

Do you guys have any suggestions for me within £70 on Amazon UK - no RGB please?

Or any suggestions of how I can find RAM that runs at 3200MHz or relatively high without overclocking?

Thank you.

So I just got a Ryzen 7 5800X and then I needed to buy ram sticks, I originally wanted to buy a 3600mhz ram but none was available and I couldn’t wait So I bought a crucial Ballistix 32gb 3200mhz cl16

and now some people are telling me that although the latency of 3200mhz cl16 and 3600mhz cl18 are the same; I should’ve bought a 3600mhz cl18 ram because ryzen cpus prefer 3600mhz over 3200mhz

Should I keep them or should I return and buy the other ones?
