Well... you know, dang it... some chargers have some smarts in them. So, sometimes one size fits all doesn't work quite right. Also, you really want volts and amps. Not saying have volts and wattage doesn't lead to correct calculation of amps, I just feel a lot safer seeing the max amps. Maybe that's just me. Answer from cjcox4 on reddit.com

r/techsupport on Reddit: Replacing a Dell laptop charger with a HP charger
May 14, 2020 -

Laptop: Dell Inspiron 7520

Processor: Intel Core i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz

Installed RAM: 6 GB

Charger: 90 watt HP charger

So I had to get a new charger for my old hand-me-down laptop after I accidentally tripped over the cord and broke the tip. I went down to my neighbourhood tech store after calling ahead and telling them my situation. They told me on the phone that they have chargers that will cover any and all Dell laptops. When I got there the guy gave me an HP charger but told me as long as they are the same wattage and voltage that it will work. When he booted he said something about looking for a screen to find out about the charger but I didn’t hear him clearly and I also couldn’t see the display. After booting it and logging in, he checked the battery icon on the taskbar and it said, “Not charging.” I was confused but I had also told him that my battery was already barely functioning and that I didn’t know if it had the ability to pull a charge before. Even with the original Dell charger, it would last less than a minute before going into sleep mode to conserve power if it was unplugged. When I finally got home and booted the computer myself, I was greeted with a black BIOS screen that said something like, “the AC adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.”

I’m wondering if this will impact my computer’s usability or even flat out if it’s safe to use. I’m a complete novice so any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Should I be okay or should I return this thing, get my money back, and try to find an exact replacement online? Thanks again!

I have several Dell laptops and have found them to be very particular about wanting to use only Dell AC adapters. I would get an original Dell replacement, and not a universal or other charger, as you will get lots of error messages. It should work, and it probably will charge, but you will be pestered with error messages if you don't use a Dell charger, or at least that has been the case for me with several computers. Fortunately in my case the original Dell labeled chargers have been pretty much the same price, or a few bucks more than the generic chargers. I think Dell is trying to make sure you use only their accessories, which probably is a good thing, and the annoying messages are better than using a proprietary connector on the chargers and charging several times what a universal charger would be like other manufacturers sometimes do. My guess is the HP charger probably isn't an exact match, might be slightly under what the Dell wants, or expects. There have been situations where I will occasionally get the error message with the original charger as they get older, making me think as they get out of specs that error message is triggered. I have used universal chargers, which sometimes trigger the error message, and it did charge the computer. Many times it did take longer, but it did charge. When you are out of town and forgot your charger sometimes you have to improvise, and nothing happened to my computer. Since I was able to order the Dell replacement from Amazon I did that and just keep the universal one in my bag for emergencies. It really is best to get the original/official replacement as if something bad happened, like an electrical damage if you are using original or Dell branded accessories you would have a better shot of getting them to repair it than if you were using another brand.

I've a Dell i5 core 7th gen laptop and it doesn't work without plugging in the charger. What are the ways to fix this issue? - Quora
Answer (1 of 3): Most laptop batteries have an expected life span of about 2–3 years before they start losing a significant amount of their storage capacity. Many will last longer, but some don’t. And very few will last 6+ years. It’s time to replace your battery.

r/Dell on Reddit: I need help finding what charger to use
September 28, 2024 -

So I have had this computer for a while and need it for school, but earlier this year the charger or the computer refused to gain charge.

But it was only recently that I was able to get it to best buy for a very basic inspection. After telling them the problem, they told me that the charger itself was the problem. So im trying to find the right one but non of the chargers seems to be the correct one. They all are the usbc universal.

Like the image 2nd pic shows, that is not the correct one (at least i dont think so) , so can someone please help me or tell me what the correct charger is?

I wrote this on my phone so sorry if the text looks off.
