Hi! I just got a new(to me) refurbished Dell Latitude 7420 last month, and when I went to do diagnostics just 10 minutes ago, it said that the battery was near the end of it's usable life.
It still boots and such, but I was wondering what it would cost to get a new battery installed, and what to do to prevent this from happening again? I use this laptop for all of my writing and art, and I really don't wanna lose it until the warranty kicks in in June.
What can I do to stall until the warranty, and how much would a replacement battery cost? How can I prevent this from happening in the future?

If you are in the US, a new battery from Dell is about $100 ( https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/pfydresults/271334?categoryId=8490&sid=52 ) and an aftermarket one on Amazon is $40-50 ( https://www.amazon.com/ZTHY-Battery-Replacement-Latitude-T17G001/dp/B08JLS429S ) Unless you have a buddy who will do it for beer money, in the US, paying a professional to replace the battery is likely to cost more than the battery. Fortunately, it's easy enough to learn on your own. Aside from the Dell service manual ( https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/latitude-14-7420-2-in-1-laptop/latitude_7420_sm/battery?guid=guid-f65273b2-af5e-4c69-b895-7cef2148f79d&lang=en-us ) there are a ton of how-to videos on Youtube, for any common model - including yours: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGM76SMPSwU (first search result, not necessarily best) As for preventing it happening in the future, there are four ways to keep batteries able to come to a full charge longer - but keep in mind that batteries are a consumable part and are meant to be used. They have a natural lifetime of a few years and after somewhere around 2-4 years will be losing significant lifetime no matter WHAT you do to presere it. So balance any of the advice below with your need to actually y'know, use the battery. Store it at a medium level of charge if it's going to be off for a long while (more than a few days.) Storage at a full charge or mostly discharged is one of the quickest ways to damage a battery. Avoid extremes of heat and cold. Lithium batteries don't like freezing temperatures, or temperatures above 40c. For longer-term storage, 15c-25c is a better range. Avoid what Dell calls "ExpressCharge" - fast charging the battery ages it faster than a slower charge rate. On the 7420, you need to manually enable ExpressCharge in the charging mode in either the BIOS/UEFI or a utility (either Dell Optimizer or Dell Power Manager, depending on which is installed.) Don't discharge to zero if you can avoid it. Very deep discharges hasten battery aging. When Windows warns you (typically at 10%) shut down or plug in. Don't charge to 100%. This is harder, since you will often be on AC and you don't necessarily want to have to unplug and start discharging as soon as it's done charging. Fortunately, software for this - in the BIOS/UEFI or in Dell Optimizer/Dell Power Manager, set the charge mode to either "primarily AC use" (which will charge to 90% but show it as "100%" on the screen) or setting a custom charge policy to stop at 90% will do this for you. For a more expensive battery (eBikes and cars, you'd probably really want to use 60% of the capacity - never go below 20% or about 80%) but for a laptop, this would be silly.
