Dell Vostro 5590 review - the Empire strikes back | LaptopMedia.com
December 9, 2019 - Nevertheless, the plastic itself feels sturdy enough, and we would describe the Vostro 5590 as more robust, than not. In terms of measurements, the laptop weighs 1.82 kg and has an 18.7mm profile – pretty 2019-ish values. Its lid can be opened with a single hand, although you have to be super focused and transfer a lot of qi energy in your fingers to do so. And despite its lid is susceptible to some bends, they are by no means too substantial to make it not strong enough. More interestingly, Dell has employed a hinge that uses the lid as a lever that lifts the base above the surface, the laptop is sitting on.

r/Dell on Reddit: My Dell Experience: Dell Vostro 5590 (It's Bad)
February 20, 2022 -

I purchased a Dell Vostro 5590 on July 10, 2020. I wish I could say that my experience as the owner of a $1000 laptop has been a breeze; however, I can't. In fact, my experience as an owner of this laptop makes me wish I had returned it as soon as it arrived at my doorstep, better yet, I wish I had never bought it. After less than a year the left hinge needed to be replaced. These awfully stiff, cheap hinges began to slowly pop open after around 5 months of owning the laptop. It wasn't until around 10 months of ownership that I decided to call up Dell and inquire about this issue, as the hinges had begun to pry the display frame from the screen. Luckily, they sent a technician to fix it for me free of charge. What's more, the charging port failed after (1 year of ownership, yayy!!!) my warranty expired, and I had to repair it myself. I am now writing this 8 months after my laptop was repaired by a Dell technician with both left and right hinges popped open, prying at my display frame, and crackling every time I move the lid. Tell me again how this isn't a design flaw. Not to mention the constant micro stuttering while streaming videos, browsing, and doing things that competent machines are capable of doing (yes, I keep my laptop up to date, drivers and all). I can definitely see why this laptop is unavailable on their website now, if only it were pulled sooner. For $1000 I wish I could say I got my money's worth, that I purchased something from a company that put effort and care into their products (especially in this price range); however, I can't. It is safe to say that I'll probably never buy another Dell product ever again. Caveat emptor??

I just got the Vostro 5590 about 24 hours ago. First impressions:

- Build quality is just so-so for the price. The display lid is metal, everything else is plastic. At least it has a bit of texture and isn't the kind of shiny, super-hard and cheap-feeling plastic that you see on many laptops below about $500. But it's nice and light - I haven't weighed it myself but Dell's site says 3.7 lbs, which is light for a 15.6-inch laptop.

- The display is IPS (WVA stands for wide viewing angle, which on laptops means IPS). It has reasonable contrast, but it doesn't get bright enough for outdoor use. Mine has a fair amount of bleed. The Surface Laptop will certainly have a better display.

- Benchmark performance is as expected. The 10th gen Comet Lake CPUs (like the one found on this laptop) offers hardly any performance increase over the 8th gen (Whiskey Lake). Mine has integrated graphics only.

- Excellent port selection, including Ethernet, HDMI, 3 USB-A, USB-C, micro SD, and headphone jack. USB-C supports Power Delivery (my 45W ZMI charger worked fine, although I can't guarantee the same if you get the version with discrete graphics). It also supports display output. The included charger has a traditional barrel-type connector.

Overall, it's a decent laptop that does what I need (I was looking for something with a matte IPS display, num keypad, and USB-C with Power Delivery support). But this isn't in the same class as the Surface Laptop.

My Dell Experience: Dell Vostro 5590 (It's Bad)
I looked up how this laptop is built on Google and from the first picture of the interior it was clear that this unit is meant to break. All plastic and looking for a replacement palm rest I can see that the hinges are only screwed with brass screw inlets, again it is literally built to break. Consumer notebooks of the lower class or those with a good price/performance ratio in terms of performance are in most cases the worst when it comes to durability. If it's not gaming, I go for business models from the dell latitude, hp elitebook or lenovo thinkpad series. More on reddit.com

October 30, 2019 -

Hi all, I'm in the market for a laptop right now as I'm in second year uni and figured it would increase my work flow a lot. I was thinking about getting a surface laptop 2 but then noticed the 3's were getting released soon so I waited for those and now they're out and look pretty good , especially the 13.5 inch surface laptop 3, but my budget would only allow me to get the base model which is i5-10th gen , 128gb ssd, 8gb ram, and a 2256x1504 resolution , which all sounds pretty good besides the slim 128 GB ssd, I'm willing to spend about 1600$ CAD and this surface laptop comes out to around 1400$ cad with my student discount. Then as I was searching around online I found a laptop on Dell that seemed surprisingly good, the Dell vostro 15 5590 , having an I7-10th gen, Nvidia GeForce MX250 2gbDDR5, seems like 8gb ddr4 2666 with a slot for another dimm, and a 512 GB ssd, although the resolution is lower and it does use a WVA panel which might be a tad bit worse than the surface laptop 3's as well, but this laptop comes out to around 1360$Cad as it's on sale right now which makes it cost less and seem better. So I guess I'm just wondering now if anyone has any experience with this specific vostro or any vostro in general as I'm just not sure if I'm missing something obvious to why it's so cheap such as bad materials / faulty hardware and someone can provide some insight. Another thing too is that obviously black Friday / cyber monday is around the corner too and I don't mind waiting till then if I can save a few hundred on a better deal. Thanks ! https://www.dell.com/en-ca/work/shop/laptops-ultrabooks/vostro-15-5590/spd/vostro-15-5590-laptop/cav155w10p1c5105ca this is the link for the vostro laptop btw

Also, just another thing too, the laptop I would be getting would primarily be used for school work, so think Microsoft office type stuff as well as light-moderate web surfing with the casual light game (like wow classic which isn't very taxing at all), I have a desktop if I really want to play some bigger games.
