I remember when the phone first came out people were split into two camps, the first being conventional knowledge that closing apps saves battery, and the other being that leaving them open in the background actually saves battery because the phone doesn't need to load it fresh when you go back to it. Has there been a consensus?

The reasoning behind the latter is because closing the app requires them to be reopened when the time comes, which in itself cause increased battery usage. However, it's felt negligable for a while now because of Android's phone usage adaptation. Imo, if you want to really save, close apps you use once in a while and leave common apps like social media apps running in the background. I've honestly not seen recent tests done on this but optimisations over the years have been so good it feels like it shouldn't even be considered as a huge battery impacter. Aside from phone usage, phone signal really hits the battery as well as screen brightness imo

I know that in many versions of Android long ago app/background killers were a big thing reporting that they would extend battery life by stopping apps from running in the background. I never knew if this was snake oil or made a difference, but now with Android 14, do app/background killers make sense (from the battery saving POV), or do apps in the background not draw much battery power and I guess mobile data?

I mean if its RUNNING in the background what do you think it is USING to run? As for battery saving apps, I personally saw a drastic increase in battery life on my old Jelly bean device where I rooted and ran these apps. So for back then I can vouch they worked. Non-rooted maybe not as well but rooted definitely. As for today most of what those battery apps did is basically baked into Android now. I mean after lollipop thats all Android updates have been. Features implemented in custom versions of Android, whether by vendors or the community get picked up and dropped 1:1 with plenty of telemetry into the Android ecosystem and a new number is added onto it. So yeah modern versions of these apps are snake oil mostly. Can't speak for rooted apps though. Those might have some effect on battery life depending on how intense it is.
