I posted here last year asking about the Douglas by Novosbed - I thought I would follow up since I see only one review has been posted and it was mixed/negative. Hopefully this helps any Canadian mattress shoppers considering this bed.
My partner and I decided we wanted a new mattress in early 2017 and I started shopping around. We were previously sleeping on an Ikea Sultan Hansbo coil/memory foam mattress, which is one of the softest mattresses Ikea sells. Our bed frame is the queen size Ikea Malm with the Luroy curved bed slats. I am 5'8" 145 lbs and my partner is 6'1" 200 lbs. We are both back/side sleepers and we have a 50 lb dog who occasionally cuddles with us. I am a very light sleeper and my partner sleeps like the dead.
We had slept on a Lasting Impressions foam mattress at a hotel, which is advertised as medium firm, and we really loved it, so we knew we should look for something on the firmer side. Our Ikea mattress had helped us realize that softer =/= more comfortable for us, and also that things like edge support and motion isolation were important (who knew?!). Lasting Impressions does not ship to Canada, so we settled on the Douglas, since Novosbed had very positive reviews as a mattress manufacturer.
We ordered the Mattress on September 10th and it arrived September 18th. Photos here of me shoving it in the back of my Honda so I could drive it around from our mail box to the back of our house. The box was in fairly good condition - the corners were a bit crumpled but no serious damage. I couldn't lift it myself, but I was able to bring it in through the garage and up a short flight of stairs without help by shoving and rolling it.
Unboxing and removing the plastic was easy enough - set up took less than ten minutes and the mattress expanded to 95% of its size almost immediately. There was a slight chemical smell initially, but it did not fill the room, and it disappeared almost completely once the mattress had sheets on it. We were able to sleep on it with no issues less than 6 hours after unboxing. The mattress expanded to full size over the next couple days.
The mattress cover seems well made and breathable. The material is thinner and less plush than it appears in the photos, but I have no real complaints. It's easy to remove and clean if needed.
We have now been sleeping on the mattress for five months, and our experience has been extremely positive. It was a huge step up in quality and comfort from our Ikea mattress. For the first few weeks I was spending a ridiculous amount of my spare time just lying in bed. The edge support and motion isolation are great - I'm not being woken up by my partner getting in and out of bed anymore, which is a big deal for me as a light sleeper. My partner and I realized there was a certain level of discomfort and stiffness that we had become used to waking up with - we didn't notice how bad it was until it was gone. I think "medium firm" is an accurate description - it was a touch softer than we expected, but still very supportive. We are genuinely excited to get into bed every night now, and are still stoked about how well we've slept every morning. Happy to answer any questions!
Thanks for the review! I am considering this mattress—- How long did it take to ship/arrive once ordered? And how did you coordinate the shipment? (Did you know ahead of time when it would turn up?). I live in an apartment and am trying to wrap my mind around the logistics of these online beds :)
I don't know why I didn't think of looking at the reddit reviews first. I ordered one last week, and fedex says it will arrive tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing what the difference is from my spring mattress.
