Down is rated by "fill power" and source. The sources can range from cheap chinese down to white goose down to "premium" eastern european white goose down. A decent base fill power seems to be 600 and it basically represents the fluffiness for a given area. As fill power increases the selling point is more warmth for less down. These premium comforters usually start at 700 and can go up to 800 or 900. At these higher numbers the comforter would weight less obviously because they literally have less down, but it's higher fill power so you don't need as much. So a 46oz fill weight 600 fill power will be just as warm as a 35oz fill weight 700 with the only added benefit of the latter being weighing less. Also just because it's a down comforter doesn't mean its 100% down. Some of the cheap down comforters are literally 10% actual down (shitty down too). A decent down comforter is above 75% actual down. If you want an extremely lightweight down comforter you're going to pay a lot. Even then, the only selling factor is maximum warmth for weight ratio. You can get extremely rare down for $5k and sure it's lightweight, but unless you want to sleep naked with the heat off and windows open in canada, it's overkill. This more premium down, even the 700+ fill power, is mostly sourced to extreme outdoor gear such as below-freezing sleeping bags for hikers. Personally I would go with LL Bean OP, for the return alone. You can give it a trial run for a week and if you want a warmer version they will accommodate you with no bs. Really you will find that any decent down comforter (600 fill power, 75% down) will be lightweight. The upgrades to 850 fill power are almost magical lightweight and the novelty will wear off and isn't worth the expense unless you're some moneybags. Again if you live at an antartic research station, sure spend $1k on a 850 premium comforter, but mostly the higher end down is for this type scenario and siberian camping sleep bags. Haven't had it more than a few months, but we bought a lightweight one from https://www.thewoolroom.com/ and it's been really good so far. It doesn't "drape" over you quite like a good down duvet, but it does seem to be more breathable and better for temperature regulation. More on reddit.com
