Why is Dune so popular?
Dune is to space opera what Tolkein was to high fantasy, basically. There's also the fact that the ecological, political and philosophical themes resonate and remain relevant in the modern world More on reddit.com

I would trust Guillermo to do the God Emperor of Dune movies. He's got a special touch for visuals in horror/weird shit. I would be down for it. But it might be too much Dune for the audience, like the super-hero movies fatigue. More on reddit.com

My review of Dune (book 1)
I just wanna say this advice as someone reading through the books for the first time, it may or may not apply to you: I loved Dune so much because I loved Paul. Into Messiah as you begin to realize Paul isn’t this person or hero you thought he was, I started to lose interest in the series in a way. I kept reading children of dune and god emperor but kind of rushed through them and didn’t enjoy them much. Since the release of the movies I’ve re-read the books a second time and I’ve really taken my time to enjoy them and I’ll say this. I might’ve liked Messiah more than Dune, and I think I loved Children of Dune even more than both! They are fucking amazing stories. I’m currently on my re-read of God emperor but it’s been amazing. Enjoy the ride! More on reddit.com

Dune Part Two is a mess
This is a truly insane post to me. No personal offense meant to you. Just the take. Like you say this movie is rushed???????? THIS MOVIE?!?! The first 90 minutes is a slow burn of Paul’s becoming part of the Fremen, learning their ways, developing relationships, all while planting the seeds for the Lisan al Gaib prophecy. Saying it’s hyper-active filmmaking is also objectively wrong. CHAPPIE is hyper active filmmaking. THE FLASH is hyper active filmmaking. Those movies cut like crazy. Scenes have no time to linger or breathe. Whereas Villeneuve is KNOWN for his patient, methodical approach. The average length between cuts is, I guarantee, longer than 99% of blockbusters. Saying the final battle has no build is also objectively wrong. Over the course of the movie, Paul moved further north toward the Harkonnen home base. He also attacked the spice harvests specifically to get the Emperor invested. And they develop the idea that the Bene Gesserit had been preparing for a showdown between Feyd and Paul, which set up the showdown between them. And then saying the thematics weren’t handled tactfully or emotionally says more about your media literacy than it does the movie. If anything, they’re too tactful because you have a large swathe of people who don’t understand Paul is the villain. I can’t believe this post is anything other than bait. If you want a full literary analysis of the film More on reddit.com

r/dune on Reddit: Why is Dune so popular?
March 8, 2024 -

I'm 26 and I just heard about the Dune universe last week because of their map packs on RISK the board game. Today I just learned that Dune is one of the best-selling science fiction books of all-time.

Why? What makes it stand out compared to other science-fiction films and why after over 50 years is it still so popular?

As someone who doesn't follow sci-fi, I first assumed that the newest Dune film was a knock-off Star Wars film, as many films in the 2020's lack creativity and like to spin-off blockbuster titles... Turns out I was dead wrong. Star Wars was actually inspired by Dune, so obviously I'm quite ignorant to Dune's impact in sci-fi culture.

I'd like to understand your culture and interest better, please share your thoughts.

Thank you.
