On the Many Cuts of "Dune" (1984) - by Mikhail Skoptsov
November 22, 2021 - In this article, I want to discuss three different versions of Dune, the maligned 1984 arthouse blockbuster that director David Lynch credits with convincing him to never make a movie again without having secured final cut.

Dune (1984) directed by David Lynch
Back in 1984, David Lynch made an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction classic Dune. It was a troubled production, and Lynch’s original version ran to three hours, which was then edited down to a two-hour film, resulting in a dense and awkward film being released in cinemas.

David Lynch’s Dune Is a Beautiful Sci-fi Disaster
“That’s the big lesson,” Lynch later reflected. “Don’t make a film if it can’t be the film you want to make. It’s a sick joke, and it’ll kill you.” Even with all its disasters, from pacing to Sting, Lynch’s 1984 journey to Dune remains an absorbing and enlightening spectacle of potential.

David Lynch's 'Dune' at 40: David Lynch's 1984 adaptation is a true spice oddity | Space
December 30, 2024 - Dune: Part Two" has completed Denis Villeneuve's spice odyssey in box-office smashing style (until the director gets round to making " Dune: Messiah", at least), it's more obvious than ever that David Lynch's 1984, single-film adaptation of ...

r/dune on Reddit: Dune 1984 Editing Question
May 25, 2023 -

I rewatched Dune 1984 last night for the first time since having completed the Original Dune Saga. Ive probably seen David Lynch's Dune about 4-5 times over the course of my life with the first time being when I was probably 7-8. But I only became a genuine Dunehead this past summer when I finally sat down a reread the original novel and then continued on and fell absolutely in love (stopped after Chapterhouse).

All that said, watching the 1984 version I was well aware of its....*departures (though holy crap I can't believe what a huge role the weirding modules play in the plot despite being completely invented)...*but what really was the most jarring thing for me was the editing - specifically in the last half of the story. The beginning half is really evenly paced and most scenes have time to breathe. You get to absorb the incredible set design and all of that. But then Paul meets the Fremen and it starts to feel like somebody writing a paper who thought it was due at midnight the following day but turns out it's tonight and it's already 11:00pm. Not only are major events just run through at breakneck speed there's all sorts of cuts, and overlays, and screenwipes going from one location, then to another for 5 seconds, then back to the same location, then back again. It's so chaotic!

Is anyone more familiar with the creation of the movie able to account for this? I know that David Lynch absolutely hated making it and has gone on record describing it as "a nightmare" but I'm also familiar with and a fan of more of David Lynch's typical work (Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, etc.) and if I were to accuse him of anything 'over-editing' would most definitely not be on the list.

I also know that there are a few different cuts of the movie floating around out there so that might have something to do with the particularly jarring nature of the second half - I just rented it from Amazon which it listed as 'BBC America Presents' if that shines any light.

'Dune' Director Denis Villeneuve Says He Was 'Destabilized' by David Lynch's 1984 Version: 'Things Were Missing'
March 1, 2024 - Denis Villeneuve knew two things when he was 13: He wanted to be a filmmaker, and he wanted to adapt Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi epic “Dune.” So he was especially excited in 1984 when David Lynch’s adaptation starring Kyle MacLachlan ...

Dune (1984)
Sci-fi war epic has cult appeal; expect gore, stereotypes. Read Common Sense Media's Dune (1984) review, age rating, and parents guide. This movie is mainly interesting as a curio in the career of brilliant director David Lynch (The Elephant Man, Mulholland Drive). Fans may enjoy combing through Dune to find his special touches, but his detractors will argue that it's just more "weird for weird's sake." Unfortunately, anyone looking for a satisfying and coherent science fiction epic will have to look elsewhere. Lynch compressed Frank Herbert's 500-page novel into an awkward 137-minute movie, r
