How does Dyson cyclone technology work?
Dyson cyclone vacuum cleaners use centrifugal force and a bin, rather than a bag, to capture dirt and debris. The idea was originally pioneered and patented by James Dyson. It has since been refined across various machines. Such as the Dyson V8 Cyclone vacuum, which delivers powerful, fade-free suction due to its cyclonic vacuum design.

r/dyson on Reddit: What is the purpose of the cyclone assembly on the Dyson V8 (and their other stick vacs)?
January 8, 2024 -

I recently acquired a Dyson V8 Motorhead Origin for $40, second hand. It works, aside from a broken dustbin latch and being absolutely caked in dust.

I decided to take it apart with the help of some YouTube tutorials and I cannot help but ask… why are there so many different chambers in the cyclone assembly? What are all those little channels doing?

Also, side-question that doesn’t need an answer; despite all the gaskets up there, every single different chamber was absolutely coated in caked-on dust. Is this expected? Or is there a leak somewhere?

The caking comes from humid environments and accidentally breaking the rules and intentionally vacuuming piles of fine debris such as ash or cat litter. A little compressed air will take care of that. The cyclone body comes clear off the motor for easy cleaning. You may be able to find a new dust bin on ebay for it. You have the main air inlet, then dust bin, then shroud, then it goes into the side of the cyclone and spins down. the fine dust falls into the collection cup and the air is rerouted directly up into those little tubes you can see on the outside. Then it goes through the central fitler from teh top and then takes a 90 and goes into the motor. The cyclones are just the right size and number to separate most of the fine stuff from the air. In fact they separate all of it. The only time particles get through is when you overwhelm the cyclones. once your home has been thuroughly cleaned, you will notice less dust in the filters. Don't accidnetaly abuse your vacuum capcity. Always empty it before it gets to max and you won't overwhelm cyclones. Don't intentionally vacuum ash or cat litter or anything like that. That is a job for a shovel and shop vac. You may want to go on amazon and get some new prefilters and hepa filters for it so you can keep them washed and always have a fresh one. Compressed air keeps them healthy. Just don't ever shoot air into the motor or you will spin up the motor and fry the circuit board. If you must, you want to stop the fan with a screw driver or something so it can't spin up.

The small channels increase the g force inside the machine which helps with separating dirt from airflow. In the main bin it may spin at around for example at 200mph the cyclones increase this massively to 950mph. And in the v10 its like 79000g force. The dust will hinder this a lot as the previous poster gave such an in depth reasoning as to what may have happened I wont go into that but mostly its poor maintenance blocked filters, damp or using it on the wrong stuff ash and brick/plaster dust are the main culprits.
