Edward Jones commission only Select account? (no Management Fees)
I’m not familiar with Edward Jones platform but is it self trading or through an advisor? If it’s through an advisor, EJ and the advisor will still make money. Your mutual funds will likely be a “non advisory” share class. So, you will either buy A share that come with an upfront commission(likely 2-3% of investment), or you will be in a C share mutual fund where the internal expenses of the fund are about .75%-1% higher than they normally would be and the advisor and EJ will get paid by the fund company. So management fee or no management fee, you’re still paying it, it’s just hidden in commission accounts via mutual funds. If you’re trading yourself, do yourself a favor and select a discount broker. Is there a value in the individual select account? Roth IRA’s have contribution limits, so it’s likely the advisor opened up a “single” (aka individual, taxable, brokerage all three being interchangeable account registration type names) as well as the Roth. The idea being if you max out your Roth contribution amount but want to save more on top of that, the single account is where you would go. Generally speaking there’s no harm in having that account open as long as you are not being assessed any fees on it. More on reddit.com
Is Edward jones as bad as they say?
They nickel and dime you: https://www.edwardjones.com/sites/default/files/acquiadam/2022-12/ira-schedule-of-fees.pdf E.g., just to have an IRA with them costs you $75 / year. They also charge you 2% load on dividend reinvestment of a stock. Plus when you try to leave they smack a $100 termination fee on you. To put this into perspective, at one of the “big 3” low cost brokers (Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard) (and many others), these services are free. And EJ does absolutely nothing to warrant this price differentiation. Plus there are the indirect shitty aspects of EJ, such as pushy salespeople looking for commissions on subpar product, and terrible expense ratios on nearly all funds they offer (last I checked, which was about 6-8 years ago) on their IRA’s. Edward Jones advisor swears no fees other than 1.08% annual. How can I find hidden fees?
1.08% is a pretty bad fee anyway. Get your money out of there and just buy index funds yourself. More on reddit.com

r/personalfinance on Reddit: Edward Jones commission only Select account? (no Management Fees)
August 31, 2020 -
I have an Edward Jones account with mutual funds and inquired about my management fees. I was told I have a Select account that is commission only meaning I only pay commission when trades are made.
Has anyone heard about this? Could not find any information about this type of account. This is not a retirement account, just regular individual mutual fund account.
I assume the agent is shooting straight, just surprised EJ would have a 0% management fee account.

A non IRA select account has no fees. You pay a commission for each transaction. Some assets, such as mutual funds may have 12b1 fees. This account provides flexibility for investors: who do not meet account minimums for the other fee based accounts, don't want the benefits of automatic rebalancing, want to buy assets outside of EJ investment policy guidance, want to simply buy and hold an A share mutual fund. EJ is not a discount brokerage, rather it's a full service financial advising firm. Stock commissions are higher than TD, Schwab, etrade, robinhood, etc simply to deter clients from participating in "day-trading" or timing the market. Client's cannot place their own trades. They must work with their advisor or call their client relations team to place trades.
