What are some good quality books on Java 17 to learn Java?
Please ensure that: Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions You include any and all error messages in full - best also formatted as code block You ask clear questions You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions. If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning. Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit/markdown editor: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://i.imgur.com/EJ7tqek.png ) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc. Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit. Code blocks look like this: public class HelloWorld { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Hello World!"); } } You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above. If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures. Opinions on "Effective Java 3rd Edition": did it live up to expectations?
Given that the only radical change in the language between Java 8 and 11 has been modules, and you can currently mostly ignore the module system, everything in the book is completely valid for anything from Java 8 onwards. Buy the book. More on reddit.com

It seems that you are looking for resources for learning Java. In our sidebar ("About" on mobile), we have a section "Free Tutorials" where we list the most commonly recommended courses. To make it easier for you, the recommendations are posted right here: MOOC Java Programming from the University of Helsinki Java for Complete Beginners accompanying site CaveOfProgramming Derek Banas' Java Playlist accompanying site NewThinkTank Hyperskill is a fairly new resource from Jetbrains (the maker of IntelliJ) Also, don't forget to look at: The official Documentation The official Java Tutorials Our community resources thread If you are looking for learning resources for Data Structures and Algorithms, look into: "Algorithms" by Robert Sedgewick and Kevin Wayne - Princeton University Coursera course: Part I Part II Coursebook Algorithms 4th Edition Your post remains visible. r/learnjava on Reddit: Effective Java by Joshua Block
May 11, 2025 -

I'm a computer science student trying to deepen my java skills and came across the book "Effective Java" by Joshua Bloch which was recommended all over reddit.

My question is: is it still relevant?

I just received my own copy from Amazon and realized that it's updated for Java 9 and currently the latest edition. As of today, Java SE 24 is the latest version.

r/java on Reddit: Opinions on "Effective Java 3rd Edition": did it live up to expectations?
October 5, 2018 -

(Trying again, because somehow the AutoMod decided I was asking for Java help (???) and deleted my previous post.)

"Effective Java 2nd Edition" is unanimously regarded as one of, if not _the_ must-have book for every Java programmer.

A couple years ago I toyed with the idea of buying a paper copy, but then Mr. Bloch confirmed he was working on a 3rd edition, so I decided to wait for it, wait for it. It finally came out in December 2017 (after several delays), and I was really excited to get it. But... at the last moment I decided not to buy it, because of some valid concerns that others expressed: mainly, that Java 9 itself was too new and its adoption was too low to have "tried-and-true best practices" already defined, so it was up to be seen whether the book would be as "effective" as previous editions (at least when it came to Java 9 items).

But! We're almost on the last quarter of 2018 now. It's been 9 months since the book was published. We have Java 10 and 11 already, a different release roadmap... Java 9 has been turned into a non-LTS release, and I'd say most developers have probably decided to skip Java 9 entirely and go for Java 11.

So I was wondering... Are the Java 9 items in Effective Java 3rd edition any good? What about the Java 8 ones? Is the 3rd edition of the book still a must-have for Java developers?

Score: 3.5/5 Effective Java: even the title is concise and to-the-point, like the rest of the book's writing. This is not a book for beginners, but rather a book on general software design concepts, particularly with respect to Java itself. The book is organized into a few dozen "items", most of which follow this format: 1) "Here's a suggestion.
