False dichotomy is when you list two options as though they're the only two options when they aren't. For example, "either you support invading Pakistan or you support terrorists" is a false dichotomy - perhaps you hate terrorists but think an invasion of Pakistan would be an ineffective way to fight them, for example. 10 False Dichotomy Examples (2025)
January 3, 2024 - One of humanity’s longest running false-dichotomies is the debate over nature vs nurture. Are people the product of their genes or does the environment shape them as we grow? It is clear that genes affect many physical features such as height, but at the same time, improved nutrition can have a substantial impact on this genetic manifestation. In regards to psychological constructs, research has demonstrated the effects of the environment as well. For example, children raised in environments with certain parental practices and educational opportunities are more likely to become financially successful adults (Krueger et al., 2008).

What is a False Dichotomy? Examples of False Dichotomies Applied to Autistic People
I can't tell you how many people, including doctors, that have said I'm "too smart" to be autistic. And by smart they just mean "able to hold a coherent conversation". Just last Sunday, a grandmother told me that her previously non-verbal grandson must not be autistic because he is learning to communicate and doing ok in school (with a lot of assistance). It's exhausting. More on reddit.com

False Dilemma
When only two choices are presented yet more exist, or a spectrum of possible choices exists between two extremes. False dilemmas are usually characterized by “either this or that” language, but can also be characterized by omissions of choices. Another variety is the false trilemma, which is when three choices are presented when more exist.

Series on Logical Fallacies - The False Dichotomy — Those Nerdy Girls
March 2, 2022 - The false dichotomy tries to win an argument with a false position by proposing that the only other explanation is something clearly false, forcing the choice between two incorrect options. In reality, more options exist. For example, some people suggest that the presence of infections after vaccination proves that COVID vaccines don’t work.

4 weeks ago - Furthermore, the options in false dichotomies typically are presented as being collectively exhaustive, in which case the fallacy may be overcome, or at least weakened, by considering other possibilities, or perhaps by considering a whole spectrum of possibilities, as in fuzzy logic. This issue arises from real dichotomies in nature, the most prevalent example is the occurrence of an event.

r/askphilosophy on Reddit: Are there instances where false dichotomies are reasonable?
October 21, 2022 -

I'm wondering if there are good examples where an arbitrary distinction between things is useful and moral and how you would respond to those who dosagree. If you can't define where the line exists then should there be any distinction made to begin with?

Examples: what we consider a species, the line between adults and children, the rights of an individual vs the rights of society. All of these are arbitrary, but important.

Effectively, what approach would you take to someone who says that two things aren't different because you can't define the exact point where one becomes two. I understand this touches on many different philosophical question (Ship of theseus for example) and I have a sense that there is some sort of underlying assumption or complex question that is being leveraged to obfuscate the fact that its practically impossible to come up with definitions that encompass 100% of cases and if we dont distinguish between things and concepts then discussion becomes untenable, but can't put my finger on it.

These results are a clear replication of the general effects on adults found by Brisson et al. Affirm inferences were also easy for children, Deny inferences were difficult (even more so than for adults), and content had a profound effect on participants’ performance. Whenever more third options could be generated, children were less likely to fall into the false dilemma fallacy.
