FiiO X3 Review — Headfonics
January 22, 2023 - Feted for their quality-to-price ratio and bang-for-buck kings they have kind of stepped into the unknown or a radically different and more competitive market of DAPs for the X3 and offered us a high-quality DAP for the price point of $200. I would have to say this is going to be a qualified rather than unqualified success. It is going to sell well for sure. The FiiO fan is almost ‘Apple-esque’ in their dedication and those who want a good quality DAP and are on a budget will take a second look at the X3 I have no doubt.

FiiO X3 (2nd Generation) Review | SoundVisionReview
September 21, 2020 - On the other hand, in terms of components, ease of use and sound quality, the second generation X3 is undoubtedly better than its predecessor and in certain areas it is getting very close to the flagship model, the X5. Therefore, we believe that the increase in price is fairly modest, and for less than $300 you will get an extremely modern, high-quality and versatile portable music player / DAC with great sound. This is why the Fiio X3 sucks, and always will suck.
Seems like elementary features broken that we take for granted in a portable music player. More on reddit.com

Random questions from a new Fiio X3 Mark III owner
Is there a way to quick-scroll through songs, albums, and artists? I've got so many it takes several minutes of scrolling to get from top to bottom. Long press in a track/file list menu to enable the first-letter search function; long press in any menu except for a track/file list menu while playing music to enter the Now Playing menu. Is there a way to view Album Artist as a tag? My music collection is set up for iTunes, so a compilation album may have 10 artists on it, but only one album artist, and that's what I care about. If the artist has been tagged in the song file properly then they should show up in the artist list view. What's the best/most efficient format for the SD card? The best way to format a card is to put the blank card into the player and telling it to format it. As far as I am aware it will only work with FAT formated cards. Is there a way to make it louder? Even on max volume it feels a bit quiet. Several things you can do here: You can switch the gain from low (default) to high Make sure all of your music has replay gain tags written to them (The X3 Gen 3 currently does not have a replay gain function but apparently they are looking at adding it in the future) Getting a better pair of earphones, I switched from some Audio-Technica ATH-CKX9iS to some Fiio F3 earphones and the volume (and sound) difference was amazing (and the F3's were very affordable at NZ$40 vs the Audio-Technica's at NZ$100) Your best be would be to change the gain and try a new set of earphones especially if they are Apple brand earphones (headphones that are designed to work with cell phones may work alright with the X3-G3 but any other headphones will likely require a portable amp to function properly) When I want to raise or lower the volume I have to click the volume buttons 50 times, because if I hold them down it will skip songs. Is there a way to disable this song skipping? Hold the play button until the volume adjustment dialogue pops up, then use the wheel to adjust volume. And lastly, is there a way to install a different music playing application on the device? No, the only players that you can use different players on are the Android based X5 & X7 players. FIIO X5 GEN 1 - OR - FIIO X3 GEN 2
Hmm, I’m leaning heavily toward the x3 mk2 seeing that the x5 v 1 can’t do DSD and also that the x3 mk2 can be an external DAC for my laptop.. still torn tho More on reddit.com

FiiO X3 Mark III Portable High Resolution Music Player - Reviews | Headphone Reviews and Discussion - Head-Fi.org
July 25, 2017 - FiiO’s products have followed a very simple formula since 2007 – affordable, stylish, well built, functional, measuring well, and most importantly sounding good. DISCLAIMER The X3 3rd generation (from this point known as the X3iii) was provided to me gratis as a review sample.

Fiio X3 DAP Review
October 16, 2019 - Being used to the build quality of the Astell & Kern AK100 and AK120 players (Headfonia Store is a huge Astell & Kern reseller), the Fiio really doesn’t feel like it belongs in the same class but obviously that’s a stupid comment as the Fiio retails for 1/3 the price of the AK100. A more valid comparison is to the popular Cowon players as the X9 that retails for $199 and is heaps ahead of the X3 in terms of build quality, screen size and technology (touch screen and UI). This review would get huge if I would describe every single menu item the X3 offers.

FIIO X3 MARK III REVIEW-FIIO---BORN FOR MUSIC
The X3iii is a fuller, rich sounding presentation with a more planted low end and a stronger even harmonic bias in its timbre. Simply put it is much smoother but more dynamic sounding than the older X3ii. In my X2ii review, I mentioned how the X3ii lost a bit of the original’s lusher timbre ...

November 13, 2017 - With a complete renovation of design and the all-new all-touch navigation wheel, the X3 III feels new yet familiar. This, together with the X1 II, is the only device in FiiO’s lineup not to use Android as its operating system.

Fiio X3 (third generation)
The Fiio X3 is the mid-range DAP in Fiio’s lineup, slotting between the budget X1 and the high end X5 and X7. The third generation X3 or X3 Mark 3 as Fiio calls it, offers a lot of improvements over the second generation model including Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity, a touch sensitive scroll ...

Review: Fiio X3 Mark III Digital Audio Player | iLounge
May 14, 2021 - The X3-III’s buttons are satisfyingly clicky, though we think it’s noteworthy that they exist at all — in a world where we’ve become used to touch-only interfaces, it’s nothing short of wonderful to have physical buttons for track and volume controls. The X3-III is available in a safe black/silver colorway, but we think the red housing of our review unit is simply stunning. In short, Fiio has nailed the physical design of this player.

June 9, 2015 - Specifications and Design You could easily mistake the Fiio X3 (Second Generation) for the X1, since the dimensions and looks are nearly the same. The X3 is marginally thicker and weighs a little bit more. The casing is still metal, and looks and feels excellent.

r/audiophile on Reddit: This is why the Fiio X3 sucks, and always will suck.
April 29, 2013 -

UPDATE: Some of the features i've listed and some nuances i've noticed (that werent really in the way, just mildly annoying) have been fixed in update 1.31. Still nothing as far as UI organization.

Changelog for 1.31 can be found here

Also fiio contacted me again and ive let them know that i was making suggestions for improvement, and that they should look to head-fi and facebook (perhaps polls) to get input on what firmware changes to make.

While its nice that my thoughts are being considered, i highly doubt enough people will want a more ipod-like sorting algorithm running.

JamesFiio on Headfi along with the actual Fiio facebook page have both informed individuals that when we have a feature request or firmware improvement suggestion, we should email to the Fiio Support inbox. So I did.

Here is the result in which they reiterated exactly what I knew already and essentially told me that they will not be changing a single fucking thing.

To elaborate on why I suggested these changes:

  1. In category view, there is no "All Songs". If you select artist, it simply enumerates every single song by that artist. It does not let you go to artist>album>track. In Category view, for the sake of organization, the All Songs option should be there. Also, you should be able to view either all albums, or all albums by an artist. not JUST all songs by an artist.

  2. when you go to category>artist, it will have everything in alphabetical order. so now you have no way at all to see album groupings aside from actually going to the album.

  3. Whats worse, in this "artist" grouping, lets say i have 3 albums. It will list them alphanumerically....INCLUDING THE TRACK NUMBER. And the idiotic thing is, they dont do this in accordance to the file name. They actually rip the track information out of the id3 tag and include that in their alphanumeric sorting. So now, it will group like this by track number: 1,1,1, 10,10,10, 11,11,11 12,12,12, 2,2,2,3,3,3,4,4,4.

  4. When the hold switch is activated, you dont want to interact with the device anymore. You've been staring at the thing doing your thing, now you want to make sure you arent preessing any buttons accidentally. So why the fuck do i have to wait for the backlight timer to count down? wouldnt blanking out the screen automatically save me battery life in the long run?

  5. Numerous users have reported that their 64 gig cards completely choke the device. They cannot have their tracks in multi-level folders, and can only dump all tracks into a single folder if they want it to work.

Currently, the only way to use the device like a standard english device would work is to have your folders meticulously organized on the SD card and to use "browse by file" rather than tags. And having a 64 gig card (on this shitty 8 gig player) completely destroys that functionality as well.

DONT BUY THIS PLAYER. The cost is WAY too high for such trash. Get an ipod+LOD+amp, or an ipod touch, or a Cowon, or a newer android phone (which supports USB Dacs).

EDIT: in the grand scheme of things, the hardware functionality of this player is fucking fantastic. Its pretty much only the UI that has big problems. Also, the 64 gig card issue seems to be sporadic and i dont think they know exactly what is going on with that.

FiiO X3 Mark III Review — Headfonics
November 7, 2019 - Fun fact for those who still have the X3 but the primary hardware interface on the front panel was in fact modeled after the Sony PCM-D100 pro recorder interface. I love that big brick of a recorder as a DAP in its own right also. The recent split from HiBy meant that FiiO had to basically come up with their own replacement software for the X3 series DAPs without breaking that previously known pitch of power, battery life, and portability.
