March 7, 2019 - When we last saw our little blue file cabinets they were just beginning to take the form of an L shaped desk. On top of the cabinets and forming our desktop is a 4 foot by 8 foot piece of 3/4″ sanded plywood. I had the nice folks as Home Depot slice a foot off, so it was only 7 feet long then that was sliced in half to give me two, 2×7′ foot sections of desktop.

Built in single drawer units, these file cabinets can be put together as a stack of two, three or four. Add a base and a similar cap, and you have a classic-looking file cabinet. Or you can make two stacks of two, connect them with a desk top and a pencil drawer, and you’ve got a handsome desk.

I also spray painted the legs and the piece of wood for the top of the desk white to match. I really wanted a clean, crisp look for the desk. The next step was to cut the legs down to size. They were too tall so my husband stood them next to the file cabinet and drew a line across the edge of the furniture leg from the top of the file cabinet.
