You can name your files whatever you want. The file extension is part of the file name.

The extension isn't anything special - it's just letters at the end of the filename. It serves 2 purposes: It gives you a clue as to what type of file it is. For example we all know by now that a .jpg is usually an image, and a .txt is usually text. Notice I say "usually" - nothing enforces these rules - it's just convention. Some operating systems will open the file using an extension-specific program when you double-click the file. In the case of Windows this is done by looking at the file extension, then using the registry to find what program this file extension is associated with, then starting that program.
