Intuit is a shit company that actively lobbies congress to make it nearly impossible to not use them. However, you can (and should) use freetaxusa instead, if you’re going to use a tool like that. Some situations still require a fee but it’s worlds better than TurboTax, and they make it really easy to switch and explain the process as you go (and the costs that do exist are much lower!) FYI all of these free tax programs are similar, but AARP usually will do more complicated returns than VITA. They all can do simple self-employment returns with no employees, subcontractors, or net loss.
They are also good options to e-file if your DIY return is getting rejected for AGI and you can't figure out why. Prior year AGI is not required through the free tax preparation programs because they verify your photo ID and Social Security card / ITIN letter.
