Flooring Underlayment Basics: What to Know Before You Buy
February 25, 2023 - In new, well-built construction, the subfloor may be so sturdy and smooth that carpeting can be laid directly on a carpet padding attached directly to the subfloor, or hardwood flooring can be installed on a simple layer of rosin paper spread over the new subfloor. It is also possible that the previous floor covering might adequately serve as your underlayment. For example, it is common for laminate flooring to be laid directly on existing sheet vinyl. And new luxury vinyl can often be laid over old vinyl without problems.

r/DIY on Reddit: Vinyl plank flooring with underlayment attached
May 18, 2023 -
Hey all,
First time homeowner here looking to do my first ever renovation on my new condo. I'm planning on installing some vinyl plank flooring that already has an underlayment attached. My question is whether this is enough or if it would be wise to add another later of underlayment (floors are concrete underneath). Second question, would it impact the foot feel in any negotiable way? (I e make it a softer step)
Thanks in Advance!

The real issue is that the flooring is not made for that. If you add another layer of something that is semi-flexible underneath (not like a layer of plywood), then stepping on the planks can cause them to flex just a little bit more than intended. That, in turn, puts more pressure on the thin vinyl edge strips that interlock the planks, which can cause the planks to crack and separate. And then your floor is ruined.

I don’t know about adding additional other than other things might look funky if you do too much because you’re raising the height of the floor. I will say I have Lifeproof LVP on a concrete slab and on 2nd floor of my house and the first floor is significantly harder. It’s not unbearable at all but if your back is ever hurting and you need some full support all the way across, it’ll do the job lmao

Here is a key to successful laminate flooring : use only material that is at least 10 mm, not including any underlay. Avoid 7 and 8 mm products entirely. 12 mm ( not including any attached underlay) is even better, but 10 mm not including underlay us minimum! It’s andy better to find narrower planks , less than 5” . Narrow thick planks are not nearly as prone to cupping, which occurs in cheap laminate.

I would just go by the price and quality of laminate. Laying down underlayment is just unrolling plastic on the floor and maybe taping it down(so it doesnt roll back) So very little impact.
