June 4, 2018My wife and I went on a Harry Potter tour in Edinburgh for our honeymoon! We ended at the Edinburgh Walk of Fame (I think that’s what it was called) and got to see JK Rowling’s hand prints, the real Thomas Riddells grave and a lot of other spots around the city that were inspiration to the book!
I am so jealous. So very jealous. I've never been to Europe and when I go the first time, it will be to see all the Harry Potter places and if that makes me a dork, so be it! More on reddit.com

...So? Maybe there's no direct, conscious inspiration. Maybe she didn't see the street and think "oh, I'll use it for my story". Doesn't mean some of it couldn't have subconsciously sneaked in, and if it's the case it doesn't make her a liar. On top of that, the book description of Diagon Alley is a typical old and busy street in the center of a big, old city. I'd be more interested in the film makers' inspiration than the author, if you're going for this. Also, when I have to ad diversity to a story set in a world roughly equivalent to where I live, my first thought is "ad North-Africans and Arabs" because that's the non-white ethnicities present in the village/small town where I grew up. I wouldn't call that inspiration for all that, even if it did shape a small facet of my worldbuilding. More on reddit.com

Hi everyone,
I'm visiting Edinburgh for a couple of days and I am a huge Harry Potter fan so I'm looking for recommendations. What's a good HP walking tour? I see the Potter Trail is called the original one but there are also a lot of them on tripadvisor, getyourguide, etc. Does anyone have a recommendation for which one is good/has tried any, etc?
Also, is there any other Harry Potter-themed stuff I can do in the city?

This tour of Edinburgh was huge amounts of fun for my friend and I (we're both intense Harry Potter nerds). It was really interesting to see the places that inspired Rowling and the magician (who is not always on the tour, but was the day we took it) was a wonderful touch. Our guide was Jodi, who was friendly and made the whole experience even more amazing. Definitely recommend!
