I actually used to work with the original founder of the freelance writers den, Carol Tice, before she sold it. This was almost 8 years ago now though so things may have changed significantly since then - I have no affiliation with them or incentive to promote them now, this is just what I remember hearing from various community members. The biggest appeal back then was the job board, it was more tailored and exclusive, like many paid job boards, and I believe there were also some connections with various publications/employers that might get you a better chance of getting gigs with them. I have no idea if the job board is of the same quality now (or if it still exists even), but it was pretty solid back then. Of course there was training and other such stuff, but like you said in other comments most of that could be learned online - Carol has also published several books where I'm sure you could learn the same stuff. The other big appeal was the community, one advantage I can see to paid communities is filtering out the junk. Everyone who's paying to be a part of a community like that is more serious, versus the low effort/mediocre posts you see frequently on free places like this (and this is one of the better spaces). Again, can't speak to the quality now, or even if all of those aspects still exist, but those were the two big selling points I remember talking to the members about. I'm sure there was other stuff too, but honestly this was so long ago I can't remember so take this all with an appropriately sized grain of salt. Answer from InconspicuousBrand on reddit.com

Freelance Writers Den Review. Is it Worth It? Our Honest Take
February 24, 2022 - No freelancer has time to work for peanuts, and we have even less time to scrounge around on the internet trying to figure out where the well-paid jobs are. So for me, the Den’s job board is easily worth the price of entry all on its own. The forums are an amazing way for a work-from-home writer to interface with other real, live people—who actually understand the unique challenges we face as freelancers and can help us find the resources, opportunities, and advice we need.

r/freelanceWriters on Reddit: What About "Freelance Writers Den"
August 3, 2020 -

Does anyone have experience with "Freelance Writers Den" ???

After several months of being on their "waiting list" I finally got an invite to join. The cost is US$25 a month. They seem to offer a lot of guidance, advice, and even job listings. Like many "grow your income fast" writing programs, it looks good. But I'd like to know a little more.

Any comments from this group?

r/freelanceWriters on Reddit: Freelance Writer's Den?
January 3, 2024 -

Freelance writer's den just opened up. Is it worth signing up for? What's included? I still have to set up a website and LinkedIn and all that kind of stuff, so.

At the same time I don't want to get bogged down in "learning," if that makes sense. I'm one of those people who can really overanalyze how to do something and methodology and the "right way" and all that.

Oh man, I can’t believe it’s still around. I read Tice’s blogs as a newbie. She had such basic advice I basically used it as a substitute for Googling. Of course her advice was peppered with increasingly grandiose claims and constant webinar/Den promos. I eventually blocked the emails. Buy the Freelancer’s Bible from the Freelancers Union if you’re super new. It gives a good overview. You can get into a lot of trouble with silver bullet online info products and memberships.

Answer (1 of 2): I can’t speak to the Den membership, but I followed the free content on the site for years and years. A bit of the advice and encouragement was helpful when I was just starting out. Though as the years went on, some of the advice seemed unrealistic.

September 25, 2012 -

I keep seeing freelance writer blogs talk about this members-only board, Freelance Writers Den. Apparently it's the greatest thing since sliced bread or something, but I'm a little leery of trusting people who all have guest posted for the Freelance Writers Den owner's public blog on several occasion, is all. Sounds like a scam - get fantastic info you won't get anywhere else and JOB OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL MAKE YOU THOUSANDS for only twenty-some bucks a month?

Has anyone joined this site? And if yes, is it worth it?
