To add onto the other answers, if it helps you to internalize the difference in verb choice, "tener frío" has to do with having a sensation of cold. Food cannot have this subjective sensation, so it does not make sense to use "tener frío" here. For that same reason, this sentence is illogical: *"El cadáver tiene frío". [attempted: The corpse is cold.] The corpse was once alive but can no longer have any active sensation of cold, so "El cadáver está frío" is correct in this case. This may be getting a bit ahead, but if "it is cold" is referring to the weather, then it's yet a different verb: "hace frío" (literally, "it makes cold"), because the phrase envisions the weather actually doing something to make the surroundings cold.

Just in general going forward in your learning journey, avoid thinking about your native language equivalent. When your teacher tells you the correct form, immerse yourself in the language logic instead of conflicting it with English.
