I'm working to learn German. I vacation for a month or two every year in Germany, and while I don't regularly bludgeon German ears during my trips, I do try on occasion. In particular with numbers, especially with Germans willing to help with my horrible pronunciation.
One thing that regularly comes up though is numbers. When I try saying, say, fünfundfünfzig, so far everyone has told me fünfzigfünf is just fine, that I don't need to say 5 and 50, I can say 55.
Is this a case where my pronunciation is simply so horrible that they want to get past listening me to as quickly as possible, or are Germans (or perhaps regions in Germany) cool with either number order?
edit, additional content: To be clear, in these conversations, the listeners are speaking up and is telling me that fünfzigfünf is acceptable without being asked.
