r/CreditCards on Reddit: Best Mastercard with no foreign transaction fees
February 10, 2022 -

Hi everyone, so a bit of an unusual situation I would think...

My (26M) girlfriend (26F) and I live together, and most of our expenses and purchases go on my card(s), (groceries, restaurants, flights, etc). She has a card that she has for her daily use and online shopping and stuff but most big expenses or regular expenses go on my cards. Her card gets decent cash back which, and she's had it forever so it's fine.

So the situation is that she and I go on a trip, every year, to Greece, plus another international trip, plus another one or two domestic trips within the US. Between my Amex Platinum and Visa Signature rewards card, we rarely have an issue with not being able to use a credit card overseas since Visa is pretty much accepted everywhere in Greece. The thing is that it does happen occasionally where only Mastercard is accepted and Visa is not. So when that happens we're kind of out of luck since neither of us has a Mastercard credit card. Again, it isn't a massive massive issue, but it is inconvenient when we go to a restaurant and then go to pay and realize we have to use cash instead because they don't accept our cards.

So ideally, we could find a card that is a Mastercard, ideally has no annual fee (or at least a fee less than $100), has no foreign transaction fees, and can be used as a regular every day card. Here is her information below... and again keep in mind that most of her expenses are low because most every day things go on my card and she just gives me money for it.

Thank you all in advance!

CREDIT PROFILE

  • * Current credit cards you are the primary account holder of: (list cards, limits, opening date): (example: Chase Freedom $X,XXX limit, 12/2019 - be sure to mention if any are business cards)

    • Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards, 08/2013

  • * FICO Scores with source (see note on FICO score sources below): (example: Experian 701, Transunion 702, Equifax 703)

    • 768

  • * Oldest credit card account age with you as primary name on the account: (example: 3 years - do NOT include cards you are an authorized user on)

    • ~9 years

  • * Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 24 months:

    • 0

  • * Annual income $: (Approximations are fine. Accuracy is most important if your income is under $20k. See what counts as income below.)

    • ~$85k

CATEGORIES

  • * OK with category-specific cards?: (Answer YES if you're OK using one card for 3% back on groceries and another for 4% on dining)

    • Ideally this could just be an every day card

  • * OK with rotating category cards?: (Answer YES if you're OK using a card that has different bonus categories each quarter, e.g. 5% on gas from Jan - March, then 5% on groceries April - June)

    • I didn't even know these existed. But no, not interested in that.

  • * Estimate average monthly spend in the categories below. Only include what you can pay by credit card.

    • * Dining $:

      • $100

    • * Groceries $: (If you buy your groceries at Walmart, Target, Costco, Sam's or other wholesale clubs, it's important that you list separate amounts for each.)

      • $50

    • * Gas $: (If at Costco or Walmart, please specify)

      • $0

    • * Travel $: (Break it down as much as possible: spend on flights, hotels, Airbnb, car rentals, trains, Lyft/Uber. If you have an annual travel budget, divide by 12 for monthly average.)

    • * Do you plan on using this card abroad for a significant length of time (study abroad, digital nomad, expat, extended travel)?:

      • We go on international trips a minimum of twice per year, so ideally this would be a card with no foreign transaction fees or offer some kind of bonus for spending internationally

    • * Any other categories (examples: phone/internet, insurance) or stores (example: Amazon) with significant, regular credit card spend (the more you specify, the better):

      • Only other category is international spending which is the main purpose of this card.

    • * Can you pay rent by credit card? If yes, list rent amount and if there's a fee for paying by credit card:

      • Not possible

MEMBERSHIPS

  • * Current member of Chase, US Bank or any other big bank?:

    • Bank of America

  • * Active US military?:

    • No

PURPOSE

  • * What's the purpose of your next card (choose ONE)?: (first credit card, balance transfer, saving money, travel rewards)

    • * If you answered "travel rewards", do you have a preferred airline and/or hotel chain?

      • I guess getting travel rewards would be great. We mainly use Emirates as our main and Delta as our number 2.

  • * Do you have any cards you've been looking at?

    • Been looking at the citi premier card. Looks to be a good option except Delta isn't a partner which is a bummer but I guess you can't have everything.
