r/msp on Reddit: Heads up on GoDaddy email migration
July 19, 2020 -

If anyone here has customers that use GoDaddy's Workspace email, I'm sure you're aware that GoDaddy is going to be booting them to their Email Essentials Microsoft 365 service. This is a good thing for the customers in theory, but GoDaddy migration progress is a hot mess.

My one customer affected by this was forced to migrate. GoDaddy assured us that all emails would be migrated and not to worry. But I always worry. So like a good tech, I backed up the OST to a PST before deleting the account to re-add it as Exchange Online. And, surprise, the 3 past days of emails were gone. I restored this user's emails from the PST and went about my business. Unfortunately, I later learned that they have at least one user that only uses her email on mobile devices, and without a backup those emails are just going to be gone.

So just a heads up. Be prepared if this service "upgrade" hits any of your customers.

r/Office365 on Reddit: Email Migration from GoDaddy to Microsoft - Shady Practices?
December 17, 2023 -

I'm a small business owner and decided to step up our Office365 account and add Teams Voice for a more professional phone system. My partner and I currently have Office biz subscriptions through GoDaddy which of course is a ripoff, so I decided to purchase a bundle directly from Microsoft and migrate our email to them. The 1st agent I talked to at Microsoft walked me through what I needed and was very insistent I click through to purchase the package from his emailed invoice, then email him the order confirmation number. No big deal, I'm all for helping someone get their rightful commission.

The 'business services' rep I spoke to today, who is solely supposed to help me get our email migrated, walked me through cancelling all Microsoft subscriptions and licenses that I just bought last week in order to 'accomodate the migration'.... in other words, I contact him after GoDaddy turns admin rights over to me and then he helps me purchase new licenses directly through Microsoft to setup the new migration. This just seems weird to me, I feel like the business services rep (who was only supposed to be tech support) is having me take all of these extra steps just so he can somehow get the commission for what would appear to be a new signup. However, I'm just a consumer and don't know what it actually takes to get this done, so I'm trusting in this Microsoft employee to guide me through it.

Is this normal? If not, I'm going to be pissed about the obvious, not to mention the fact that the original rep who was very helpful will likely get scammed out of his commission.

I have my personal domain registered to godaddy since 1998. Back then I used to have a personal blog before blogger, youtube and all those social media sites were around.

I since stopped maintaining the site but I continued to renew my domain so I can use the FREE webmail service that came with my account. Private email is still better than free email for security reasons.

Additional Charges for Something I Didn't Ask

Fast forward to today and now email (Workspace) is being migrated to Office 365 and I'm surprised to learn that I'm now gonna be charged an additional $30+/year for a change I didn't request.

Now granted Workspace is being phased out for lack of development, but users like me are happy with it and don't need the latest and snazzy features of Office 365 email and I'm being asked to pay for more.

Contacting support I was not given any consideration or any other choice. My account was even "grandfathered" since email is part of the service that I signed up for. If email is no longer free, then have the new account sign ups pay extra if they need the email service.

Account Being Hijacked

Ok, so since support didn't even offered me any other choice, I asked how do I get refunded for renewal service I paid in advance until Aug. 2023 and how do I initiate a domain transfer.

The answer I got is if I transferred my domain, I won't get refunded bec. domain will be deleted on my account. If I refund first, then still, they will have to delete the domain first before I get issued the refund. That's the way their system works.

Hello! Domain transfer is a thing! I can't believe their customer mgmt system didn't allow this process of transferring domains and refunding for the unused months paid in advance.

Now I'm not sure what my next action is going to be.

Anyone else feel the same way as I am with this migration to Office 365?

r/Office365 on Reddit: Migrating from Godaddy M365 to Microsoft 365
July 20, 2023 -

I have a customer who has about 50 email accounts, or about 1.2Tb of data on the GoDaddy Microsoft 365 platform. There are several limitations we are running into and the customer would like to migrate to a true Microsoft 365 Platform.

I have done a M365 Tenant to Tenant migration before and it was not a pleasant experience. Microsoft provided 0 support, and actually told me that it was impossible to do, so I basically had to perform complete backups of all email accounts, then re-upload them.

I do have some concerns about the migration because I basically have to release the tenant name back to public, then re-acquire it after 24 hours, according to what I have seen. The customer has someone (believed to be their previous IT person who may or may not still be in contact with employees at the company) actively trying to sabotage them on a very frequent basis. I am concerned this person may try to acquire the tenant's name during the 24 hours and get it before I am able to.

Beyond that, I am very interested to know what tools you have successfully, or unsuccessfully, used for this process. While I have a fairly fast 500Mbps internet connection, it still seems to take several days to download the entire data set. I would like something I can do a trial run with, then something I can run differential backups with right up until the last minute.

I would also like to set up something to cache all the emails while the system is down. I am thinking something along the lines of a Linux mail server, or maybe a 30-day trial of a mail security program that has that functionality.

r/sysadmin on Reddit: Trying to escape Godaddy O365 email and move to another provider. HELP
December 26, 2022 -

Hello folks,

I currently have Godaddy email with their horrible Office 365 integration for my company email. I need to move to another provider because I a tired of all the problems with their clunky O365 product. In fact, I don't want the standard Office 365 or Gmail suite at all. I would prefer to have email on my own server. I have seen the defederation thread and it looks a bit complicated for a person of my skillset. I can set up email boxes and figure things out fine but have no experience running DOS shell programs or anything.

Can someone recommend a good email provider that plays nice with Microsoft Outlook? Also if I cancel my Godaddy email account can I migrate them to the other provider over several days without any problems?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi Everyone,

I need advice for the fastest solution for my problem.

We have 60+ godaddy business email plan. And recently godaddy has discontinued those plan and asking us to take thier office 365 plan, which two times the price micrsoft offers.
So we have decided the purchase the plan directly from the microsoft itself.

Now here's the problem, I need to migrate this 60+ users mailbox to microsoft mailbox manually. In these 60 users, 40 users have Imap account and other 20 users have POP3 account with mailbox larger than 50gb.

Please suggest how can Automate this to save my time.
Thank you

r/sysadmin on Reddit: Need Help with Email Migration on GoDaddy - Any Advice?
June 23, 2023 -

Hi r/sysadmin,

I'm currently handling a bit of a tricky situation with domain and email migrations within GoDaddy and could really use some insights or advice from anyone who's navigated similar waters.

Situation Overview: The domain was transferred successfully between accounts within GoDaddy, but the associated email accounts didn’t follow suit. They're still active under the original account, which is causing some logistical issues.

Possible Solution that I'm Considering is: One option I could come up with is to delete all the '@___.com' email accounts from the original owner's account and recreate them on the new owner’s account. My main concern here is the potential loss of email data. Does anyone know if GoDaddy provides a reliable way to migrate email contents and storage to ensure no data is lost in the process?

I've contacted GoDaddy Customer Support few times but they are never available. Has anyone here dealt with a similar situation? If so, what route did you take, and how did it work out? Any tools or tips for making this process smoother would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

April 6, 2022 -

Hey folks!

I am hoping to get some guidance on the best way to move or handle GoDaddy domain + email essentials to office 365 + GoDaddy domain.

So I have a Godaddy domain and 10 users on the "email essentials plan" and I want to move to an Office 365 + GoDaddy domain combo. The main reason we want to move is that we would like to stop buying office licenses one by one and it should be easier for us to manage. We don't see our users growing past 15 people anytime soon but want to keep things "clean" and easier to manage.

Here is what I'm thinking are my options:

  1. Keep everything the same but upgrade my Godaddy license to use Office "Business Professional", which will give my users 365 apps and 1TB of Onedrive storage.(does anyone know the downsides to this besides being screwed by potential price gauging down the road?)

  2. Move to 365 and buy the " O365 Business standard plan" and link my domain to Office. However, it says I already have a business account and it redirects me to Godaddy. Not sure how to unlink them and if there is some data loss when doing that.

I appreciate any guidance or tips on the best approach to give me users Office 365 apps

TLDR: I have a GoDaddy domain + email essentials plan but want to move to 365 for app/email but keep my domain on GoDaddy

r/godaddy on Reddit: Move hosting and email from one GD account to another
June 1, 2023 -

I have my sister's domain, hosting and 2 office 365 email addresses in my godaddy account. I want to move them to an account that she owns. I already transferred the domain. Now I want to move the hosting and the 2 email accounts.

Talking with godaddy tier 1 hosting support (I assume) they said I had to buy new hosting on the new GD account, and then they would point the domain to the new hosting, and then I can re-upload the files for the website to the new hosting, and maybe I will get a credit for the unused 32 months of hosting I paid for on the old account.

They also said I can talk to the email support department to have them move the emails to the new account, but there will be a $99 migration fee.

Does someone from GD know if there is a way for GD to just change the account number and not have to go through all that headache? It seems like it should be much more simple than what I am being told.

Also, is there a way to get a hold of USA godaddy tech support? I have talked to very competent USA support at GD in the not that distant past, but lately all I get are outsourced folks.

Thanks!

r/microsoft365 on Reddit: Godaddy domain and email essentials migrate to Microsoft 365 Business Package
October 1, 2024 -

Hi All,

A family friend reached out to me to see if I could help them out with transferring their domain and email from Godaddy to a Microsoft 365 Business Package.

Their exact words were:

I registered a domain through Godaddy and bought their email essentials package. I have been using that for a few months.

Domain is xyzconsulting.ca
Email address there is [email protected]

I want to move this to MS. I have already bought a Microsoft 365 business package

[email protected]

I want to move the domain and migrate email from Godaddy to MS365. I dont want to lose email that is on the Godaddy server.

I have all the passwords etc.

I've been trying to research what exactly needs to be done to accomplish this and after some research I've noted a few things.

  1. There is no domain transfer as Microsoft is not a domain registrar

  2. I should backup emails to a pst to be safe but it's not needed

  3. I would be looking to Defederate Godaddy and move direct to Microsoft

I came across an article and video outlining what would need to be done (https://tminus365.com/defederating-godaddy-365/).

Am I moving in the right direction? Is there anything else I should be prepared for? If this is the wrong sub to ask in, please let me know where else I can post for guidance.

Thank you so much for your help!

October 2, 2024 -

I am attempting to migrate a couple email accounts that were established in GoDaddy and move them to Microsoft 365. I have already setup the MS 365 account (it's a non-profit Business Premium license). I have also went through the steps of defederating the GoDaddy tenant and moving the Domain to the new MS 365 tenant. I have reset all of the account passwords and have them saved. Only 2 email accounts need to actually be migrated. I've created an account in the new new tenant and assigned the email address with the domain that was moved from GoDaddy and I can successfully log into the account. However, I am not seeing any email from the previous tenant. It's basically an empty mailbox. I can send and receive email into this new account, but where is all the old email? Is there a way to get this email content moved? I do have a computer that has the previous GoDaddy account setup in Outlook, so I could potentially do an export from that, correct? Is there some tool I need to use to actually move the contents? I can look in the Exchange Admin Center for the GoDaddy account I can see the mailbox for this account and see the Mailbox Usage, so I feel like content is still there, but I don't know how to access it. Looking for some help. Thanks.

r/godaddy on Reddit: Email Migration Questions
October 6, 2021 -

I received notice a couple of weeks ago that Workplace Email was ending and that my email accounts would be migrated to Microsoft 365. I see now that this has been an ongoing process for some time and apparently it is simply my turn, but the sudden, middle-of-the-night email was the first I heard about it and I have a few questions.

First of all, Microsoft 365 is the Office Suite to which I already subscribe directly from Microsoft. It isn't really clear from anything I've read whether it is just the Workplace Email interface that is ending and they will be instituting a monthly charge to use the Microsoft interface, or if something backend is going to become Microsoft and it will be for it that they will start to charge.

IOW: I already have Office 365 and I already use Outlook as the interface for my Godaddy email, so am I all set or will I need to pay something to Godaddy for each of my (previously free) email addresses?

Is there anything else I should know about having an existing Office 365 and this migration?

Also, I have made extensive use of the old system's catch-all capabilities. I see that I can make up to 400 alias for each email account. Does anyone have any info to the contrary and because I apparently can't create the aliases until after the migration, does anyone know if it is as straightforward as the Godaddy literature suggests? (There is a note at the top of one of the pages that says if your alias does not work, you should give it an hour and try again. Because I use some of my catch-alls for two-factor authentication, I would feel more comfortable knowing that it works.)

And finally, because I have been using catch-alls, I haven't really worried about the actual root email addresses. Some I would like to change. Any thoughts as to whether that would be easier before the migration, afterward or if it doesn't really matter, before or after are both the same?

Thanks in advance for any info anyone would like to share.

I'd love to receive some advice from those who have experienced this.

Recently, 90% of our staff's ms365 license have been removed by GoDaddy due to an update on their Email Essentials plan which includes MS365 Apps and right now we are in the process of migrating our email service from GoDaddy to Microsoft 365 Business Basic and also probably plan to transfer our domain from GoDaddy to Hostinger.

Our Current Setup is:

  • Domain Registrar: GoDaddy

  • Email Service: GoDaddy Email Essentials.

Hello, I hope I’m in the right place. I recently (more than 60 days ago) set up a godaddy domain for my business and have an associated email. After realizing I’d be stuck with Microsoft office instead of g suite I wanted to see how I could switch. In short I don’t have a website, and only use the domain for email services. I don’t have that many emails to where I would need to transfer them, but it would be nice. Im trying to take my domain and email from godaddy and Microsoft office 365 to google domains and gmail. I was trying to find info on this online but as it seems a lot of it is just domain specific information I wanted to ask and be sure before I did anything.

Any insight would be extremely helpful, thank you!
