July 24, 2025 - Yes, you can hold both Class A (GOOGL) and Class C (GOOG) shares in your portfolio. Many investors do, sometimes as a result of the 2014 stock split or through separate purchases. Historically, Alphabet has not paid regular cash dividends, preferring to reinvest its earnings back into the business for growth and innovation.

May 20, 2022 -
Is the only difference between the tickers the ability to vote? All A, B, C are splitting in July, just curious on the groups thoughts or insight!
With that being said, is there a preferred ticker to buy?
TIA!

Until last year, the advantage of class C was that Alphabet was doing share buybacks of only that class. However, in 2021 they changes their rules and started doing buybacks of class A. Meaning that the only difference between A and C is that class A has voting right. However, those voting rights are essentially useless, because insiders at Alphabet have far more voting rights than all of class A due to ownership of a special class B. All in all, this means that it doesn't make any practical difference whether you buy A or C.
