Peter Tiel wrote a book called Zero to 1. In short, when a company goes from zero to one, they're innovative. When they go from 1-n, they're globalizing/corporatizing their product. This is required for continued growth. I think Google's problem is they stopped all zero to one development all together so we only have the mass produced 1-n trash. More on reddit.com
