August 23, 2024This works surprisingly well: Google Translate App > Turn on "Show original text" > Snap picture of one page > Tap any word for translation
Google Lens for OCR then copy and paste into a proper dictionary. I don't think it's unfair to expect Google's OCR to be consistent, but Google Translate is still garbage compared to any proper dictionary. That includes JMDICT, which is what Jisho and many other free J-E/E-J dictionaries are based on. Either that or install Gboard and use that to handwrite any kanji straight into your dictionary, if you can write. More on reddit.com

June 8, 2023Why did the picture function on Google translate change?
I don’t have an answer for you, but I totally agree. I used the old version for a study aid by just selecting a word or phrase that I didn’t understand. It’s pretty useless now. I hope the devs are looking at the the latest reviews in Apple’s App Store. There are like 300+ complaints about this latest camera update. I suggest you add feedback in the app via the settings menu and leave some here too: https://support.google.com/translate/thread/149058371/new-mobile-camera-translation-experience?hl=en Maybe they will hear us if we all complain there. Before, I could use the camera option to translate in real time or take a picture and let it scan for text. Then I could choose which text to translate, it could be 1 word or 1 sentence or 1 paragraph or the whole thing. The lastest update removed this option. Now when I click on the camera option it says “Google lens” it automatically blocks out the original texts and puts the translation over it, like it did previously but now when I take the picture I can not scan the text and choose what part to translate.

It used to be that when I right-clicked an image and chose to search it, I could translate the text in the image.
But suddenly, the option changed into "search with Google lens" and the option to translate diappeared. I used it daily to translate text in memes and comic strips from asian artists, and now I don't know what to do :(

Same here, just made a post about this myself. They removed all the handy functions and made everything slower. Great 'update' indeed.

Details:
You can choose "Show original text" after expanding the "Japanese->English" window.
If the UI-Elements are in the way, you can move around the snapped picture.
You sadly can't show the readings of words, but you can listen to them.
Googles OCR is amazingly accurate! Does anybody now of other apps that work as well but are more focused on studying than simply translating?
