I'm not sure they really explain the link between output tokens and images anywhere. But they do say: Prompts are billed similarly to other GPT models. Image outputs cost approximately $0.01 (low), $0.04 (medium), and $0.17 (high) for square images. So for your input it's just text tokens as usual. For output it's basically what it says there... if you were to reverse engineer it it would be something like: High quality 1024 x 1024: $0.17 / $40.00 = 0.00425 0.00425 * 1M = 4250 tokens Therefore a high quality 1024 x 1024 image uses around 4250 output tokens, or around $0.17 (Plus a cent for the input tokens, or something, I doubt that will come to much, although depends on your prompt size!) They didn’t pull those numbers out of their ass, they chose them because they are making massive losses and need to start pulling as much of a profit as they can. Personally I think this is a great thing, if the pricing delays GPT-3 adoption then I might have enough time to cross a few things out of my bucket list before programming becomes an irrelevant hobby

It seems like you're being charged $10 to input, and $40 to output, and then a few cents to generate the image, is that correct?
This is all per 1M image tokens, so if the image is only 720x720, that pricing would be less?

I don’t think you can set the resolution to 720x720. There are only 3 possible resolutions.
