I’ve been grinding my own flour for 22 years now. Love the freshness of the flour. Here’s a list of my experience: grain lasts a LOT longer than already ground flour. freshness is unparalleled the KitchenAid Grain Mill attachment seriously sucks, avoid at all costs unless you want it for making cream of wheat (very coarse grind) my first mill was a KitchenMill, good but didn’t last as long as I thought it should’ve. second mill I got was the NutriMill Harvest Grain Mill, absolutely excellent and decently priced, watch for sales at big holidays. They seriously stand behind their products. Their customer service is outstanding. No I’m not getting paid for this, hahah. I buy grain in 25 lb bags from Amazon nowadays since grain is more scarce than it used to be in New Mexico. I buy Hard Red Spring Wheat for its higher gluten content for breads, and buy Soft White Winter Wheat for making tortillas. Answer from Raspberry2246 on reddit.com

Milling flour with a hand-crank mill is extremely slow and tedious. It takes so long, you can easily triple your effort for a single loaf of bread. I find the proposition completely untenable. Save up for the Mockmill. More on reddit.com
Who grinds their own grain and what type of mill do you own? Pros/cons
I have the kitchen aide attachment mill and I love it. From what I have been told it doesn't get the flour are fine as a mockmill but I don't seem to have a problem making 100% homemilled loves of bread. They only Con might be the expense of the whole grains but like I said I'm doing 100% my own stuff, most people I think use a 30/70 homemill to store bought blend or something like that. The flavor is phenomenal. I personally am addicted to Kamut loaves right now. More on reddit.com

January 17, 2023 - i usually mix red wheat and durum and spelt and kamut, maybe rye or triticale and possibly whole oats (small quantities!). sometimes other grains like up to 6 varieties of millet, also in very small quantities. when i make rye bread i grind up the caraway seed with the wheat and rye as my wife doesn't like the texture of the sharp seeds in the bread. also, i bought my machine in 1995.

Hey guys 👋🏻,
I’m looking for a stone based flour grinder and I came across Mockmill but it is very expensive and way out of my budget.
I looked at other cheaper options but they are electric based and would generate a lot of heat ultimately affecting my flour.
Does anyone have other cheaper options to suggest? Thanks in advance

I bought Mockmill 200 for $300 from Mockmill. They have a sorta secret refurbished list. Got to call them and ask. But a Mockmill 200 for $300 totally refurbished all brand new with same 6 year warranty is the best deal you'll find.

Mill It Yourself: a history of home milling - Hodmedod's Wholefoods
July 18, 2023 - It would have been a gruelling job, taking one hour to grind just one bushel of grain, about 20kg. But the cost of labour to grind one bushel was the similar to that charged by a miller and the resulting flour was of better quality and without adulteration. Over the years, home milling technology improved. In Elizabeth David's book English Bread and Yeast Cookery, she describes a home mill from 1856 that separates the flour from the bran. This machine predated the roller milling method of producing white flour used today.
