I think checkerboard can be so beautiful but would go for a less dramatic contrast. As for whether it’s trendy or not I think it is more of a vintage feel aesthetic that would work well in a cottage style home - with architectural elements and cabinetry that fits the cosy vibe. I think the image you posted doesn’t work because the contrast tile is too dark and the quaint checkerboard looks out of place against the stark black fixtures, and questionable pendant light. The oak shelves are also an odd choice next to the walnut. If all the handles and taps where brass and the window was warm white painted wood, with the shelves in matching walnut, and the pendant removed I think it would look much nicer.
