r/AskNYC on Reddit: What's the best store/neighborhood for high-end thrift?
September 7, 2023 -
Walking around midtown and seeing tons of professionals in fancy clothes, suits, and other garments—would love to upscale my wardrobe, but paying full price for those kinds of clothes is well beyond my budget.
Lots of people talk about hitting thrift shops in nice neighborhoods.
Any suggestions on places where rich people drop off their unwanted, but higher-end stuff? What's the best place you've found for high-end thrift?

You’re 15 years too late tbh, but check the consignment shops (any of them), especially the designer ones like TheRealReal. You might do better online than in person. You can try stores in the trendy rich areas like Park Slope and West Village/Soho, but again the steals are not a thing anymore. Some unsolicited advice: what matters is getting clothes that look good and fit you. It might be worth saving your money to get clothes you do have and like tailored versus getting something higher end.

I’ve found some very fancy clothes at the Chelsea and UES Housing Works, and Opera Thrift in Chelsea but as previous commenter said, they’re not bargain priced. Heck even goodwill puts their choice pieces on eBay these days

12 Best Thrift Stores in NYC Worth Visiting - NYC Thrift Hidden Gems
January 26, 2023 - While both Satenstein and Cenisio have made impressive designer discoveries through their thrifting (Satenstein says she'd choose to save her spring 1999 Chloé hummingbird top from a fire), both suggest not relying too heavily on designer names. "Some of my best vintage is incredibly well-made, no-name pieces from defunct Italian labels," Satenstein says. With that in mind, find 12 of the best thrift stores in NYC below to help get you started.

Where do the girlies shop for ACTUAL thrift in NYC?
I no longer thrift in NYC. I like thrifting in small New England towns that don’t draw a huge crowd. I’ve gotten a $1 authentic MCM cross body bag/ a $25 dollar classic Burberry trench, perfect $10 Escada high waist wide leg trousers and TONS more. It’s worth a weekend trip outside the city with thrifting in mind. More on reddit.com

I agree with Bettina. Unfortunately, used - sorry, "vinatge", "retro" or "pre-owned" clothing and hosuewares are so trendy here that it is harder to find true bargains. Thrift stores ain't so thrifty in this town! On the plus side, the quality here is very good, esp at Housing Works.
