Good paint to buy from Home Depot
We used Behr Premium Plus (not Ultra) for our home and it's tough as nails and looks great. (We used Eggshell) I also had no real paint experience, other than painting some houses where a friend passed me a roller and said "Here, do this wall..."
That said: I wouldn't use an 'all in one, no primer required' paint: Paint and primer do different things, and shouldn't be in one can. Use primer for priming, and paint for painting.
We put Polar Bear or Igloo or some kind of north-pole named white paint over top of dark maroon/burgundy paint, so priming was important. We did three coats altogether of paint, and 4 of primer. I don't think I'd do it any differently now.
So, that's paint.
I used the Purdy brushes in 2.5" and 1.5" sizes, mostly 2.5". When you have a good brush, the brush marks level out themselves and you get a good finish. I wouldn't use anything else but Purdy or maybe someone else's top-of-the-line.
I bought Sherwin-Williams premium 3/8" nap roller covers, and the kind of roller that has the full barrel, and aluminum locking extension poles. You want to be able to paint a wall top to bottom in one stroke, unless it's a tall wall (over 9'). The Sherwin-Williams roller covers proved to be the best, I tried all the other ones at H-D. None were as smooth or lacking in lint.
If you are willing to splurge a little, buy enough roller covers that you use one for one coat, then for cutting in the next coat, then pitch it. No little fibers to pick out.
Buy good drop cloths that are canvas, and back them with plastic sheeting where you're working with a bucket. Canvas drop cloths absorb paint, instead of it smearing around, and the plastic sheet prevents soak through in case of a major spill.
Ah, tape: We used 3m blue for most things, and the high-stick FrogTape for one line where our new paint was meeting old.
Get a good putty knife or painters multi-tool. Maybe both.
I think that's all I have for you at the moment. Feel free to drop me a PM if you want more info.

Hey y’all, long time lurker here. We just bought our first house and plan to slowly paint all the interior walls ourselves. I know this sub pretty much guts anyone who doesn’t want to paint with BM or SW. However, Sherwin Williams is so far out of our price range, so that’s not an option. We also received a shit load of Home Depot gift cards for Christmas as our family knew we needed to paint our house this year. I do plan to splurge on BM paint for our bedroom and living room but would like to take advantage of the gift cards we received, so with that: what would you choose if y’all had to choose paint you can get at Home Depot?
Thanks in advance!
