June 23, 2025 - Prior to constitutional amendments in 2020, the limit applied only to consecutive terms, allowing a term-limited president to be elected again after one term out of office. The only presidents to be term-limited are Boris Yeltsin in 2000 and Vladimir Putin in 2008 and again in 2024.

Don’t know much about Russians politics but, how does putin stay in power for so long? Do they not have elections every so years to decide on a new leader? Or how does it work? Does a new leader gets picked once putin dies?

He makes sure no other candidates get media coverage, and that's if he doesn't disqualify them altogether. You've probably heard of Alexei Navalny, who died in a Siberian prison yesterday. He once ran against Putin for president. You can see how that went for him.

Have you noticed that powerful people in Russia who question his authority seem to die in plane crashes, in Siberian prisons, or fall out of 7-floor windows? I guess Putin is just really lucky.
