Have you tried researching your particular pit for this question? In general you’re right, propane is heavier than air and will settle where as natural gas wants to dissipate up into the surrounding atmosphere. While you should be ok with your setup, I would recommend identifying your pit by make and model if possible and researching the specifics for it when converting. More on reddit.com

Generally speaking, plumbers will NOT snake out a gas supply line for a fire pit or anything else, especially if it's connected in ant way to the supply line for the house. The first thing you'll need to do is contact your natural gas provider for a list of contractors who will "come and look at your situation, and possibly fix the problem for y'all in one service call.". The upside to doing it that way is that you wouldn't have to be the one to go through all the hassle of verifying the licenses of the contractors doing the work and the company that the gas company recommends should be licensed and bonded and insured and would be already qualified to do the work properly and make sure that it's done to the gas line safety and fire code standards for the municipality in which you reside. Additionally, ask if they can do video inspection of the line itself or if they'll just have to start digging to locate the problem. If they say that they can't do a visual inspection, get another contractor... Because ALL gas line installation and service professionals have Video camera inspection equipment called inspection endoscopes that they can use and it'll save you a ton in labor charges if the problem (eg. Collapsed/broken pipe resulting with blockage of flow) is only a few feet from the house or fire pit. To replace over 40 feet of gas pipeline isn't cheap even if it's just about 2-3 feet deep. But in some locations, the code standards require the line be buried as deep as 6-8 feet, or more, depending on where you live. I hope this helps.
