is there a possibility that casting a double created via Math.round() will still result in a truncated down number

No, round() will always round your double to the correct value, and then, it will be cast to an long which will truncate any decimal places. But after rounding, there will not be any fractional parts remaining.

Here are the docs from Math.round(double):

Returns the closest long to the argument. The result is rounded to an integer by adding 1/2, taking the floor of the result, and casting the result to type long. In other words, the result is equal to the value of the expression:

(long)Math.floor(a + 0.5d)

How do I convert an int directly to a double?
From your error message I wonder, how are you using the doubleValue() function? it should be used var.doubleValue() not doubleValue(var), thought it would be good to double check More on reddit.com

Please help me cast the sum from int to double. I'm new to java
Additionally: sc.nextInt(); will only pull an integer. So if you want the user input to include floating point numbers I would suggest sc.nextDouble(); then you can declare all your variables at the top as doubles and not have to worry about type casting until you print the output. I don't understand casting types in Java. Can someone explain this bit of code?
It has to do with the order of operations. In the first the double cast is on the 5, so you have 5.0 / 4, and any division where one operand is a float you have floating point division. So you're left with 1.25. In the second you first do 5 / 4, an integer division, which results in 1. This 1 is then cast to a double leaving you with 1.0. Make sense? More on reddit.com

How to convert a double to int in Java
Since double is a bigger data type than int, it needs to be down-casted. See the syntax below: ... 0.50.5 to the value and truncating its decimal points. The long value can then be converted to an int using typecasting.

Java double to int Conversion
double myDouble = 9.99; int myIntDown = (int) Math.floor(myDouble); //round down int myIntUp = (int) Math.ceil(myDouble); // round up System.out.println(myIntDown); // Output: 9 System.out.println(myIntUp); // Output: 10 · This method works similar to the Type casting method. It truncates the decimal part and returns the integer part.

How to convert double to int in Java? Example
July 28, 2021 - Since double is bigger data type than int, it needs to be down-casted as shown below: int value = (int) 6.14; // 6 int score = (int) 6.99; // 6 If you remember, floating-point numbers are by default double in Java, so you don't need any suffix, unlike representing float values. As I said, casting gets rid of anything after decimal so even 6.999 gets converted into 6.

How To Convert Double To Int in Java?
November 27, 2019 - As we all know, a Double primitive contains decimal digits. On conversion of these values to integers, the decimal digits get truncated, by rounding off the number to the nearest integer according to the method you choose. Java provides the following three ways to convert Double values to integer numbers:

January 2, 2024 - Math.round() takes a double value and rounds it to the nearest long value. This is done by incrementing the value by 0.5 and rounding the long value to the nearest integer. The long value is then converted to an integer using typecasting.

Double to Integer Conversion (Beginning Java forum at Coderanch)
June 24, 2016 - If you convert a double to an int, the result will be in the range −2³¹…2³¹ − 1. The range of a double is much bigger, and you can find the largest and smallest values in the Documentation. So you have lots of double numbers outwith the range of int values. I think the simplest way to do that sort of conversion is to use a cast, officially called a narrowing primitive conversion, and you can read all about it in the Java® Language Specification (=JLS).

August 12, 2024 - Conclusion Converting a double to an int in Java is a straightforward process, but it requires an understanding of how Java handles data types and the potential loss of information due to truncation. Whether you use explicit casting, the Math.round() method, or other techniques, it’s important to choose the right method based on your specific needs.
