r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Drawer Slide Replacements for center rail suspended
November 27, 2020 -

Here is the situation.

All the builtin drawers in my house (Kitchen, bathroom vanities) are the same kind, these monorail center tracks with a bracket screwed to the back of the drawer, and a wheel that rides the track above. They are basically these at HD.

The house was built in 1965, so they are cranky and fussy and noisy and bent.

I know I can replace them with these newer versions at HD, but we were hoping for something smoother with that slow shutting feature all the cool kids have in their houses.

The cabinets themselves have a face frame, and I mention this because it means I have very little space between the side of the drawers and the face frame (like a quarter inch or less).

I have explored replacing them with different side mounted or undermount options. I would be willing to notch out the cabinet face a half inch on either side for the side mounts, BUT they are still a problem because the interior of the frame doesn't allow for a half inch of extra space for any side rails.

As far as undermounts, I did try replacing one of them with something like this, but they really don't take the weight very well.

I was considering these undermounts but they would still require some sort of notching on the bottom corners to clear the support rail, they seem to have very limited options for length (which would require a lot of finessing and adding support blocks, etc.), and at $34 a piece for 20 drawers, adds up pretty quick.

I'm ready to give up on the slow close dream and just replace them with newer versions of what they have now, but I was hoping someone here might have a brilliant suggestion.

Hope I described it all well enough. Many thanks.

Replacing basic drawer slides with something better.
Going to side-mount ball bearing slides is a fairly simple swap out if your side clearances are right, usually 1/2" each side. They can be fussy to install and hard to adjust if you don't get it exactly right the first time. Accuride and Fulterer are good brands for side mounts. The soft close mechanisms for side mounts aren't that great Undermount ball bearing slides are the best, Blum, Hettich, or Salice in that order of preference. But you will almost certainly have to modify your cabinet openings and drawer boxes to make everything fit right, or get new drawer boxes. The boxes need to be built very specifically to work with under mounts. More on reddit.com

Drawer slides. How to fix these? When fully open these drawers wiggle side to side quite a bit making closing them difficult unless I push both sides at the exact same time. Anybody have a solution to this problem?

April 18, 2016 - That's what keeps the drawer centered in the opening, eliminating sticking on the sides. The drawer sides are a bit too high. They should be around 1/4" below the front face and the top should be rounded. The bottom of the sides should extend below the front about a 1/16" and be smooth sliding.

July 7, 2025 - To mark the cut points for the new slides, I then found the center of the drawer box and added half the width of the new slide to that measurement. I marked the new locations for the drawer side on the back panel of the drawer box and on the support blocks against the drawer front. The back of the drawer was an easy fix, I used a hacksaw to saw against the bottom of the drawer and cut the back panel down to size on either side of the drawer slide opening.

January 17, 2024 -

Ok, so we built the kitchen with the standard ready made cabinets from one of the big box stores. The wood parts are holding up well. However, we couldn't upgrade the slides at the time as they were already built.

It's time to replace them. I don't want to get random junk from Amazon. Some of the brands I've seen here are Knape and Vogt, Blum, and one or two others that I seem to have lost track of.

There is 1/2" between the side and the face. They are mounted on the rear with a small bracket.

Is it as simple as out with the old and in with the new? Anything I need to watch out for or make sure I do?

They are 22 inch. Planning on getting full extension soft closing.

Thank you for your help.

This is what we currently have in use.

February 15, 2016 - Side runners are required for drawer support. Like you, I found no video showing the installation of the center mount wooden glides. MadMark provided the link to the written instructions, which I assume you also saw on the Rockler Web Site under Technical Documents. After reviewing these instructions, I can see why you are looking for some tips. The major challenges I can see is ensuring proper positioning the center guide and slides so that the drawer slides in and out parallel to the carcase sides and perpendicular to the face frame.
