If you connect it to an x1 slot, it's going to run at 1/4 of its max potential, but it should work. There are no adapters that will allow you to connect an NVMe drive to a SATA port. Do you have a free full length PCIe slot that you can put an x4 adapter in? Answer from kaje on reddit.com

How to Use an NVMe SSD without an M.2 slot?
October 31, 2025 - You just open up the enclosure and install the NVMe as you do on the motherboard. Different adapters may have different installation mechanisms. But this one is really easy to use. Now, you can install it in x4, x8, or x16 PCIe slots.

Any way of using an M.2 NVME SSD without an M.2 slot or spare PCI-E slot?
I'd like to eventually upgrade my motherboard and CPU, but not at the moment as I'm looking forward to either Kaby or Cannon Lake. However I'm running out of SSD space. r/buildapc on Reddit: How can I add an additional nvme SSD without using an m.2 slot.
February 11, 2025 -

I am new to PC building/upgrading and do not know if this is possible or how to approach it. I am trying to add an additional nvme SSD to my rig.

Currently I have two nvme SSDs installed on my Aorus Master x870E motherboard. I want to add an additional SSD but I do not want to use another m.2 slot since the remaining ones share lanes with the GPU. If I use an additional m.2 slot it will make the gen 5 PCIE run at x8 instead of x16.

How can I use an additional nvme SSD without affecting GPU performance? Is it even possible?

This is the first time I am trying to upgrade my build, so I really have no clue.

Answer: With enough time and effort searching what you want, yes. This is an M.2 to SATA adapter; basically allowing you to install an M.2 SSD without a dedicated slot on the motherboard itself โ€” instead, it will use the SATA connector that regular SSDs use.

Now I know how. Like, I know how to do it, right? You put it in the slot, you screw it in. The practicality of this is what I'm questioning.

The whole thing is small. The screws are small. I need to hold it down AND screw it in. I'm reaching over and into my case, there's a video card nearby that I'd rather not remove cause it's huge and cumbersome and I just wanna slide this thing in and be done with it but my hands are too god damn fat and clumsy and I can't fuckin' do it

Is there some sort of special tool? Is it a two person job? Do you really need room above it so you can put your hands there? How the hell do you do this, it feels designed to be done by elven children because of how tiny and delicate everything is.

August 9, 2017 - There is no M.2 slot. Some versions use a SATA M.2 in a caddy which fits in place of the hard drive and connects to the motherboard through the same zif cable attachment. There is no hack, no splitter or juryrig you can do to make it take an M.2 and a hard drive at the same time. If you want it to boot faster your best bet is a 2.5 inch SATA SSD which would be expensive but would achieve your goal of fast boot.

Answer (1 of 3): I am assuming that your laptop current drive is SATA, and your laptop has NVME slot, and it is empty. First, prepare Windows installation media. Get a USB Flash Drive, at least 4 GB capacity. You can use bigger, but you should know that the entire drive would be erased. Go to ...

Answer (1 of 2): Yes. You can use a M.2 to PCIE adaptor similar to the one below. I have seen these with capacities capable of attaching 4 M.2 drives to 1 PCIE slot.
