It looks like Anaconda does not come with the py launcher. Some workarounds are on Python and Windows: Where is the Python launcher?.
The standard 3.x Python installers for Windows (I think from Python 3.3 and onward) have an option to also install the py launcher. See the screenshots below.
As far as I know, it is even selected by default.
After that, you can include Python shebang lines as documented, e.g.,
- here: 4.1. Python install manager, or
- if you want to have a shorter version: Multiple versions of Python on Windows
Note that (as explained here):
The launcher is restricted to launching Python scripts. It is not intended as a general-purpose script launcher or shebang processor.

You can independently download and install it from this link. Source code and more information is on GT.

It should be in the root directory of Python 3.3 installs and higher. It is not available for Python 2.
Go to C:\PythonXX\, and you should find py.exe for your version.
In a Command Prompt or your favorite shell (like Cygwin), run:
py -3.3 -m path/to/myscript.py
However, this only works if you have a 3.3 or higher installed.
Note that Anaconda does not come with Python launcher. However, it will work to set Anaconda as your default install for Python 3.4 and install py.exe separately. For example, you can install Python 3.4 from another source, copy its py.exe to somewhere on the system path, and uninstall Python 3.4 again; then the Python launcher is fully installed.
Better yet, there's a standalone installer available here.
If installing the Python interpreter from python.org's downloads and you select "[x] install pylauncher [x] install for all users", py.exe is installed in C:\Windows\py.exe (%SystemRoot%\py.exe).
If you are able to run py from cmd.exe, then you can find out where it is with where py.exe.
Hi,
I just installed the latest version of python for my user (no admin) and checked the py launcher box during installation, but no launcher was installed. The appdata\local\progams folder does not contain the launcher folder.
Is this an issue? Can I install the launcher separately with another installler because the full installer does not install it, even if modifying the current installation
Thx
Hello, guys. I have just started to learn Python from Python Crash Course. While installing the python from website, there's a dialog box which says 'install launcher for all users (recommended)'. But, in the book, it's not been ticked. I was wondering should I tick it, if yes, what does it do? If I don't, what's the difference?
so, I'm trying to download python, but it won't let me download the py launcher for some reason. I've heard that repair does the trick, but whenever I do the repair it pops up with an error that says this:
"Error writing to file:
C:/Users/(my account)/Appdata/Programs/Python/Python313/python313.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory."
How would I verify that I have access to it?
