August 21, 2024 - For any edgers that are uneven, remove extra soil or use paver sand to level out and stabilize the edgers. Sit the edgers on top of the weed block fabric. As previously mentioned, make sure that you measure the size of the edgers you’re using when planning your fire pit seating area because you want to make sure you have an exact number of edgers for the space you’re completing.

Ideally it’s on relatively level ground or a spot you can level. Consider wind direction (avoid a spot where smoke will usually blow toward the house or a neighbor). Also think about views – do you want to face a certain direction when seated? Mark out a circle or square where you envision the fire area. 2. Size and Shape: A common fire pit area might be a circle of 10 to 20 feet in diameter.

December 6, 2020 -
I'm looking to put in a paved fire pit area. Where it's going is at a slight slant and is really sick with big tree roots. I would like to level out the area and put in 1x1 concrete pavers with a fire pit in the middle.
Would you guys recommend bringing in a bunch of dirt and packing it down to level it out? Or tearing into the roots and ground? Looking at a 14'x28' area that needs to be leveled and paved.
Thanks in advance for the help!

I am in agreement with the first and last comments. But, why such a huge rectangular area. Are you going to use for other uses as well? Or is the fire pit you are constructing absolutely huge? If you have large surface roots now, then cover them you MAY end up with root heave later on. Depending on the type of tree it comes from. Many surface irrigated yards suffer surface root problems. Identify your tree, determine if your roots can be removed safely without sacrificing the tree or it stability. Removing them will probably double your work time as well. If this is not your forever house, maybe you can cover the area, grade and install if your time left is maybe 3to5 years. Good luck Yard Coach on YT

Well, for such a large area, you'd probably don't want it perfectly level. You'd want it pitched at a 1 inch rise over 8 foot pitch or "grade" so that stormwater that falls onto it will surface drain away. Preferably, the stormwater then drains onto the grass and the grass is also pitched so that it continues carrying the water away while also absorbing it into the soil. 1 inch over 8 feet = 1 percent grade 1 inch over 4 feet = 2 percent grade. Since you're considering bringing in tons of fill or excavating a lot of it, I hope you have considered the drainage patterns of the site such as where the storm water from the patio goes, and then from the grass, where does it go. ------------ As far as the "best" way to level something, you'll need a laser level for precision. You can also do it by string level but the "best" way would be to use a laser level. You can always do it by string so long as you know how. As far as whether to cut into the ground and excavate or bring in fill - that's really dependent on the conditions of the site. Primarily drainage. Also know where your utilities are such as sewer lines.

Gravel Patio Fire Pit Areas: What You Should Know
October 4, 2025 - Building up is the simplest and most common solution but digging out can be better in certain site layouts. On a mostly level site, you’ll want to clear at least 4”-6” of topsoil away.

This fire pit has been here for 3 summers now but we live on a little slope. Does anyone have recommendations on the best material to use to get it re-level?
I think I used pea pebbles and sand the last time.
