My mom started taking thyroid medication and has lost over 40lbs.
how to lose weight with no thyroid meds?
Consult another doctor. I think you are seeing the wrong doctor. Go to an Endocrinologist. Try to pick the senior most experienced doctor near your location. They take this seriously and give you medication immediately. With hypothyroidism you will gain weight and you need to take medication. To reduce hunger and frequent eating change your diet. Try Finger millet porridge, replace white rice with red rice and eat food made from millets. These things keep you full and reduce hunger and it’s healthy. Hope this helps. Both Diet and Medication will help you much better. If they still say med is not needed then change your diet like I suggested . It will surely help you.
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 3 months ago and I am not overweight but I am putting on weight and I had no idea why . I found out during my routine health checkup and my TSH was 4.5. My OBGYN Endocrinology Specialist immediately in 24hrs put me on levothyroxine and it’s been 3 months now and my weight is reduced by 8 pounds and I maintain the same diet and exercise as before. Your body will automatically reduce weight. Thyroid hormone regulates metabolism of the any food you consume. My thyroid levels are normal now and I am loosing weight without any crash diet or intense exercise . Eat more leafy vegetables . With thyroid medication , Limit white rice to 1 meal a day , no coffee in the morning with thyroid medication, switch to lean meat( no red meat ) , take more fruits, less fried food, home cooked meals, no processed food .. hope it helps.. there is no self care medication for Thyroid to see faster result in the hormone balance . There is Ayurvedic medicine but it’s slow process and I don’t know if you have any Ayurvedic doctors in USA . We have Ayurvedic medicines in India .. am in the US now and I am taking the medication my OBGYN ( who is also specialist in Endocrinology) prescribed. (Allopathy medicine)

Did starting levothyroxine/medication lead to weight loss?
My mom developed a thyroid condition as a side effect of her 2nd pregnancy. It's gone untreated for years, because medicine in the US is expensive.
For almost my entire life, she's been morbidly obese (BMI of almost 50.) She eats only one meal a day (when she remembers to eat) and it's always a small, reasonably sized meal. She's not much of a snacker and she doesn't drink sugary drinks all day. But she still never fluctuated more than a few pounds. It's like her metabolism is nearly nonexistent.
Within the past year, she finally started taking thyroid medicine, and she's shed over 40 pounds. It's amazing to see her feeling so much better. She's always been so unhappy with her weight (she was skinny and athletic until her pregnancy) so I'm happy to see her finally regain some of her confidence and self-esteem.
So, let this be a lesson... If you can't lose weight no matter what you do, get your thyroid checked! Medical issues really do interfere with your ability to gain or lose weight.
