I recently saw this tweet and it aroused my curiosity, how much does a podcaster earn? is it as profitable as they say or is it just a myth? I am a staunch consumer of podcasts but in light of these revelations I think I'm going to produce mine haha 👀 Sam Boyd about spotify, podcasters and payments.

I recently saw this tweet and it aroused my curiosity, how much does a podcaster earn? is it as profitable as they say or is it just a myth? I've never heard anyone say podcasting is profitable. Spotify only pays for exclusive content. Most podcasts are available across platforms and only receive money from ads. Income is based on how much advertisers pay you. Unless you're popular, you probably aren't making much if anything.

My podcast is on Spotify. I average 700 downloads per month (which is nothing). Between hosting fees and equipment I am 100% losing money. Most other indie podcasters I know are losing money as well. I would not recommend getting into it for the money unless you already have an audience. I don't know who Sam Boyd is, but it doesn't seem like he was interested in an answer to this question... astounded by how many people on Twitter reply with literal answers to rhetorical questions If you're interested, the reason podcasting is more "profitable" for spotify is two fold. Spotify runs ads on its podcasts whether you have a premium subscription or not AND they're not paying licensing fees/royalties for most podcast content. They spent $100 million on Rogan because advertisers want to be on Rogan, Spotify can then say that Rogan is a package deal...if you want ads on Rogan then you have to purchase ads on all Spotify owned podcasts. Not to mention the audience he brings to the platform. This does not mean that I like or agree with Joe Rogan on anything. This does not mean that I think that was the best use of the $100 million, just pointing out that there was some logic behind it. Spotify does not pay podcasts that it does not own any more than it pays musicians. The vast majority of podcasters...like the vast majority of musicians...are not making any money on it.
