How to Reupholster An Occasional Chair With Tufted Back - Addicted 2 Decorating®
August 11, 2018 - First, take the piece of chip board that came off of the chair, and use it as a pattern to cut out a new piece of chip board. Next, use spray adhesive to attach the foam to the chip board. **Note: If the old foam isn’t in good enough shape to reuse, simply use the old foam as a pattern to cut out a new piece of foam the same thickness, and then use either scissors or the process outlined on the diamond-tufted headboard tutorial to cut out the holes for the buttons.

Howdy! I’m looking to reupholster this chair. Is there any beginner videos y’all recommend or tips/tricks? I plan to just use an old sheet to see how much fabric I’ll need and was going to use a staple gun.
My tip is that isn’t a beginner chair to work on. Do you have any sewing experience? More on reddit.com

How to replace missing buttons on an armchair.
You've lost the shell top. It's like a bottle cap. You cut a circle of fabric. This goes over shell & presses together, holding the fabric between the shell top & the base. Base is obviously held in place by button twine, generally just stapled to part of the frame. It's not worth buying a button press & dye, if you want to do it yourself just ask a local re upholsterer to make you a couple of new buttons, they are standard sizes, so measure, they might even have some off cuts of vinyl in a similar col or you can pick some up from a remnant fabric store. Before you release the twine on the inside, mark it with a pen. This means the replacement button will have exactly the same tension as the old one, without trying to do it by eye to match up More on reddit.com

Can I upholster over button tufting? Do I have to re-tuft (?) ?
I've had a couch very similar to this one for about ten years. It was beautiful... until I had kids/dogs/cats/husband. Now the button tufting on the seat is honestly like... a purgatory for snacks and hair. It's borderline impossible to clean, and is upholstered in linen, which is a nightmare. I've reupholstered a few chairs/couches/stool, and have sewing skills. I know I could retuft it, but I can't find an answer whe it comes to not button tufting it. I'd like to reupholster smoothly with zero tufting, but I can't find any info on if this is a thing. Can anyone point me In the direction of a tutorial, or give advice on if I need to retain the tufting? The frame is solid hardwood, very "tight" cushioning. I just want it to he clean again! 😭 More on reddit.com

You’ll understand it better once you see the tufting starting to go into position. Start by pushing the fabric into the top two holes you cut out in the foam…allowing extra fabric in the middle. You can play with it and adjust it as you go.

August 17, 2012 - Then tie a single knot around the eye of the button. Pull it tight, and make sure that the single knot is resting right up against the double knot that you tied in the end of the cord. Trim off the excess cord. Now thread the other end of the cord through the eye of your upholstery needle. From the bottom of the chair, use a bamboo skewer to make a hole through the foam, batting, and fabric.
